Joomla! For Dummies 2nd Edition

The book does what it says - with it I was able to get up and running a Joomla site in very little time. It has served as a useful reference with many great examples. While it isn't the best Joomla book I've read (I typically buy two 'tech manuals' of a topic at a time) it is extremely useful for the less tech-savvy. The chapters are laid out intelligently and each chapter identifies clear and obtainable goals.My only criticism is the "10 lists" towards the back - The book addresses Joomla 1.6, the latest version, having been released sometime in January. In an effort to capitalize on this they released the book as close to that as possible - however, the lists are specifically for Joomla 1.5 installs. This isn't really the author's fault as the latest version is pretty new and many of the Joomla 1.5 resources haven't been updated (and some apparently won't be updated) to 1.6Great for a beginner.

When I received it, I did a quick review and wondered if I were dumb enough to need this book. By chapter 4 I realized I was, indeed, dumb enough. I started learning wonderful things about Joomla! 1.6, enough to successfully modify a template, something I really needed to learn. I'm still learning from the book, so it isn't a "one-trick pony." As with all Joomla! training, it starts with installation, which for someone who has seven Joomla! sites running seems a bit of overkill, Joomla! for Dummies progresses quickly enough that I didn't feel it was a waste of time.

I guess if you're really determined to use Joomla this book will be a good introduction. However, I found the program itself to be confusing and not very user friendly. Unless you are really into programming and like the challenge of mastering the language, use WordPress instead.  WordPress For Dummies, 3rd Edition

After being handed a troubled project to complete at work, this book saved me hours and helped get the project back on track and competed. Like all of the 'Dummies...' books this one is well organized and well written. Great resource if you are just working in the Joomla! environment for the first time, as well as, a perfect reference to go back to after working in Joomla! for a while.

Clearly writting with hands on practical examples and you're never forced to follow the chapters as they are.So it's also perfectly usable as a reference guide for beginners.Nice work !

I didn't realize this was an obsolete edition that dealt with earlier versions of Joomla.

The book take you through an introduction to Joomla! in a well written way and it is easy to follow the examples and to learn working with your own projects and homepages.If you want to go deeper into the special things however you should continue with books that goes deeper into the details and possibilities with Joomla!

This book is entirely based upon the idea of using the sample installation website as a means of creating your own custom site by deleting, changing, adding elements. It's like giving someone a car and saying "Well, simply tear it apart and rebuild it to be what you want!".Its biggest failing is that it does not even attempt to explain the conceptual frame-work behind the system. The Glossary is totally useless. There are many misleading and contradictory statements.This is a very lazy way to write a book. A complete waste of money!

Joomla is easy when you have Joomla for Dummies!! I recommend getting the hard copy vs the electronic copy especially for beginners.
