A sad and sordid book
'Industry Reform & Empire' is well written and attractively presented. It is therefore doubly disappointing to find that no less than 6 of the 12 pages on Victorian criminal justice is devoted to a prurient and lingering examination of the Whitechapel murders in 1888.This book weirdly gives more pages to Jack the Ripper than to the Industrial Revolution. Not a word on the Tolpuddle martyrs, - lets cut straight to the women's corpses. There are several photos here of mutilated female bodies. Along with these are detailed descriptions of mutilation, missing body parts and the taunting letters written to police by the killer.Despite the 6 pages on the killings, there is no attempt to situate them in any context. Nothing about Victorian family life, or of the perennial problem of violence against women. The deepest it gets is a worksheet inviting students to put the murders of the 6 women, and the letters containing body parts, into the correct chronological order.Nice work for budding psychopaths, but not a useful learning exercise for year 9!
