Japanese Tanuki Raccoon Dog Statue

I got this as a Mother's day gift, and my mom couldn't have been more excited! There's a few qualities that made the Tanuki statue a great gift:1. The color: The statue's colors match other Japanese statues and figurines (My mom has a lot of them!). Along with the small mistakes in each painted section, the colors give that authentic Japanese and hand-painted look.2. The weight: When I first opened the box (I put it in another gift box to match the card), I was expecting a light and hollow statue. To my surprise, the statue was heavy! Definitely something that will stay safe and secure on a desk or table.3. The price: Something with this kind of authenticity look and feel typically can be somewhat pricey. However, I think this was a steal for the $17 (plus tax) I paid.The only issue I have with this statue is the size. Depending on where you want to put this guy, you may want something larger. Luckily for me, my mom wanted something to go with her other statues similar in size.Overall, if you get it for the right price, this Tanuki statue has great personality! It is a fantastic gift, or a little item for yourself if you want to spruce up your desk.

Bought this as a gift for a Tunuki loving friend. Very happy with the quality and price! Had to make sure everything was where it should be, if you get me!

This product is exactly as pictured! The shipping is fast and the packaging is great to keep it safe from getting broken. It's sturdy and well-made. I would recommend.(Note: my picture makes it look like his face is scratched, it isn't scratched, that's just little tiny bits of the styrofoam packaging on it. I dusted it right off afterwards.)

A tanuki is a Japanese Raccoon Dog, which is different creature altogether.If you need a tanuki raccoon dog statue--and it's hard to imagine who wouldn't--this just might be the tanuki for you. The craftsmanship is really quite good, from modeling to casting to the final painting. Further, this tanuki is definitely rated for All Audiences, lacking as it does the traditional anatomical attributes that might render it unsuitable for children. (Or, rather, unsuitable to their parents. Children would likely find the traditional mythological tanuki features in question hilarious.) That said, this SHOULD NOT be purchased as a toy for children. It's a solid, hard, hefty item that could be damaged or could DO damage. Think of it as a sturdy display piece or a fully functional paperweight.This little fellow comes from China, although the mythology he's part of is distinctly Japanese. He has black felt on his base to keep him from scratching whatever surface he's placed on. Strictly speaking, he's a bake-danuki--a tanuki yōkai. Like the magical fox--the kitsune--he's a shape-shifter.

this would definitely make a great gift to tanuki lovers! its well built and heavy for its size. it is on the smaller side if you expected it to be big but it goes perfect on my desk

Aside from how IMPOSSIBLY difficult they are to source into the United States, the more classical 1950s style goofy big-balled versions of the storefront tanuki statues--while ideal as a gift or souvenir--are also VERY weird and VERY well-endowed... This was a pleasant and convenient alternative that doesn't break the bank, rated for those reasons. Heavy and well-made, not hollow, although not manufactured in Japan with a label on the bottom saying where. Still adorable and mystical/whimsical in a Totoro kind of way. Once again: without paying premiums on 'antiques' or obscure imports, this is as close to those tanuki statues as you'll get, unfortunately.
