Review: Expensive but reliable quality operation - I would give this product 4.5 stars. It’s not quite perfect enough to get 5 stars but certainly not deserving of 4 stars either. I have therefore rounded up to 5 stars. The biggest set back is the price. I paid £279 and I also added on 3 years extra warranty due to the steep cost. I don’t want to replace this again after a year’s use. The device pretty much does as it says on the tin. It can record from any HDMI source, right up to 4K. It’s silent in operation as it’s all solid state. I also like how lights flash (different colours too) indicative of what signal it’s receiving and whether it’s recording (and to TF card or to external USB). The instructions are straight forward enough to follow (available online only). I like that it’s both an IR and Bluetooth remote control, so you don’t need to be pointing the remote at the device to operate it. The menu system is fairly self-explanatory with settings to adjust mainly how files are recorded and the nature of the output signal. The recording quality is excellent, it does a very good job of video screen capture. Bear in mind that although you may choose to set the recording quality to the maximum of 50 Mbps; if you are recording something with little movement like “the darts” competition, you may end up with a 19 Mbps recording. I sampled recording something with vigorous movement and the recording was averaging 46 Mbps. This was viewed on a 65” screen. Be clear; it can only do ONE thing at a time. It’s not a Sky box that can both play a recording and also record a new recording at the same time. It reminds of the old days of video cassette recorders (VCR). If you are recording something, you can’t play something and vice versa. This means that you have to finish a recording before you can start watching it. Now for the cons: The device has an on/off push switch at the back. It cannot be switched off and on via the remote control. The pass through signal doesn’t work when the device is switched off (but plugged into mains). I got round this by using a “1 in 2 out” HDMI box. This means that when my pro max device is switched off, I still get the pass through via the duplicate HDMI output (albeit this uses up 2 HDMI inputs on my TV). The pass through signal from the pro max is augmented according to what your output settings are, so it’s not a pass through in the pure sense. There is a mistake in the manual. It says that it will record an input signal of 4K@50Hz at 25fps. It actually records it at 4K@30fps and there is no way of changing this. I contacted the manufacturer and they confirmed their mistake. In order to record at 4K@25fps, you need an input signal of 4K@25fps. I am making a fuss over this as European TVs work natively with 25fps and 50Hz. This device is definitely geared towards 60Hz and 30fps. Where I found this to be a problem is the motion interpolation (to get smooth movement) on my TV only works with 25 fps or 50 Hz. On the pro Max, there are settings to accept, record and output 1080 at 50hz but there are no such settings for 4K. The device chooses for you what the framerate is for 4K. I say again, for the sake of clarity; the device WILL record at 4K@25fps (the UK standard), if and only if, the source is 25fps. I have found that most sources (in the UK) are 50hz and the pro max device treats this 50hz input as 50fps. I’ve probably gone into too much detail here. Most of you probably don’t use motion interpolation and certainly all modern TVs in the UK will support 4K@30fps. That all said; it would be great if a firmware update provided the ability to record 4K@25fps from a 4K@50Hz signal. A final niggle; the fast forward and rewind doesn’t do picture scrub. It advances (or rewinds) in 30 second intervals per button depression. I found this annoying. A lot can happen in 30 seconds, particularly if watching sports. A great firmware update (hint to developers) would be the option to alter the search advances to 15s, 30s, 1 minute etc. In conclusion, it’s a great device and I’m happy with my purchase. I’ve had it for a week and it’s been put to good use. If it’s hassle free quality and reliability you want, then this is for you. Yes, it’s a lot of money but show me an equivalent device? You get what you pay for.
