A very useful & informative book
Bought this as a present for my husband but have looked through it myself. I believe it would be most useful for anyone planning to have an extension built. It seems to be pretty comprehensive and guides you through the various stages, including making the initial decision(s). It could well draw your attention to various things you might otherwise have overlooked, thus saving both money and time, and it is so much easier dealing with builders etc when you have some idea of what you are talking about. While the book is aimed at people having extensions built, it would also be handy, in my opinion, when having smaller works done, for example plastering, tiling etc, as it covers the types of materials available and what to look for in the various different trades that would be involved in building an extension, so you could just refer to the section dealing with the work you wanted carrying out. The writing is clear and easy to follow. All in all, a very good buy.

Practical advice and a thorough step by step through the process
As you would expect from a Haynes manual, this is very practical with plenty of advice, pictures and take you step by step through the general process and each step in turn in more detail.I have quite a collection of the Haynes "house" manuals and my only comment (which is why it's 4 stars rather than 5) is that quite a bit of material is repeated in the various manual. Some cover certain aspects more extensively than others but the same info with the same pictures is a bit disappointing at times.I specifically bought this book to understand the best ways to "join" a modern extension to an old building and while it is covered, it's not in as much depth as I'd hoped. On this particular subject, I feel the book deals more with aesthetics than the precautions to take with different technologies of build in period homes compared with modern houses. Having said that, my understanding of the differences comes primarily from this range of manuals!!

Really good book to read before starting extension work
Very good overview of the construction of a house extension. So much better than I thought it would be and goes into slight detail on every aspect.I'm in construction, but even I learnt something from this book!Essential reading for anyone thinking about starting a self build or hiring someone to build something for them. It would really arm you with the right information upfront before the project even starts. There's even a great section at the front and planning and project design/management when it comes to hiring builders / trades. Some semi technical information and drawings throughout, but mostly an easy to read overview that would enable a new starter to go off in the right direction to hunt down the more specific information either on regulations or construction principles.Enjoyable, colourful, informative and easy to read.
