Hip-Hop IS History
I remember hearing Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five for the first time on a Friday night in a friend's car in the early 80's. We pulled over and just sat there listening, stunned. Questlove begins his history before the Grandmaster and carries on to the present time. While, Questlove gives more airtime to the artists he appreciates more, and although I could have used more on A Tribe Called Quest and some other groups, the book is intelligent, at times funny, and really well written. I also am not saddened by his glossing over artists such as Kanye, and appreciate knowing more about Public Enemy and Run DMC. His writer's voice is such that the reader can almost hear Questlove telling the story, making it an easy read. While I will probably stay more partial to Motown over modern hiphop, being a child of the seventies, I do think this is a relevant read for our current age. It says a lot about our era, our values and ourselves.
