Better than expected
The earlier reviews are certainly mixed and after reading them, I didn't know what to expect but knew I wanted an Aperture 3 book and found a good price on a used version from Amazon. While it was used, it was almost in new condition - just a little wear on the cover but this will allow me to feel better about writing notes and highlighting things in the book. Nice margins for notes too.I agree with the reviews that the structure is awkward for sequential reading. For example, starting the book with chapter 1 dedicated to Raw and Raw editing followed in chapter 5 by "Adjusting Images" essentially results in a lot of duplication. While I understand that Raw editing is very important and a feature that I'm using, it is still something that should probably after topics such as importing, organizing, and editing jpegs. At this point, people will have files on their system, organized in some form, and be ready to appreciate the significant advantages of raw over jpeg. The book seems at times like separate chapters without much self referencing material in other chapters which would help in finding the disparate materials. Also, many of the figures feel like they are a page or two too far (early or late) from where they are discussed in the book. Bringing up the subject of figures, the print quality is okay but not great. Many figures are too small to show user interface features desired and quite a few of the figures show subtle enough adjustments that are hard (impossible?) to appreciate given the print quality and size. At times providing circles to highlight the visual effects might be helpful.Having said that, this was better than I expected from the reviews and is a useful tool for me to get going on Aperture. As a new user of Aperture, switching over from 10 years of digital photography using PCs, I found this book very helpful. I dove into chapter 5 along with picking and skimming other chapters as appropriate. The index is okay and makes it useful as something of a reference. Apple's Pro Training series book appeared to be more of a "lead by the nose" through specific examples rather than being a reference and much more expensive. I didn't really see myself working that way through the material so perhaps McMahon's book was a better fit for me.In Aperture there are often multiple ways of doing things and multiple ways of thinking about things. This can make it much more difficult to write a book - I get the impression as I get more familiar, that it is hard to create something comprehensive enough without being overwhelming. There are many free tutorial videos available for Aperture 3 from Apple and elsewhere but it was quite helpful to have this as well. In the end, I'm glad I got it despite the warts. Having said that, if it were priced close to Apple's Pro Training book, I would have felt short-changed.

Difficult to follow
This book is difficult to read the first time with no experience on Aperture. A reader with beginner, intermediate experience in Aperture 3 may have an easier time.It took time since I had to open the computer and look at the application screens so I can follow the text of the book since there are not enough pictures. I read a few chapters and decided to purchase a video "Apple Pro Video Training: Aperture 3."Now with a general expertise I may reread some of the book.

Useful, to a point.
A good introduction to Aperture 3. Not having any previous version of Aperture it was not as tutorial as I would have liked. I've figured out quite a few things, however I find myself ready to spend a little extra and get Apple's training series. This is a good book if you wan't to just get some basics down. It just really lacks in the actual adjustment tools and what order would be best for a begginer.

Very technical
This is a tough program to work with and the book just reflects this brutal fact. It is a good technical guide but we found it really tough. We will continue to try to use as much of it as we can.

Just Great
This book is really stunning written piece of knowledge about how to use Apple Aperture 3. I was new to Mac and Aperture, and had a big problem with using somethig more than just basic functions of that software. That was before I studied this book. I'm still learning, but my skills are growing every page I read. I reccomend to everybody who is using Aperture - from begginers to advanced users.

The BETTER Aperture 3 book
While Apple's text and accompanying CD version of Aperture 3 is helpful, I found the information contained in this book more informative and easier to use--and more helpful overall.

Kindle Edition: limited value without table of contents
I like this book, but it has no table of contents -- crazy for a how-to manual. I suppose I will buy the hard copy... but am annoyed enough to check out other aperture titles.

If you are new to Aperture 3 this book helps explain a lot in how to do what with your pictures! Got it used in almost mint condition and love it!

Apple Aperture : A Workflow Guide for Digital Photographers
This is a very good book. I have been using Aperture 3 for the last 18 months and this book provide a very clear and thorough guide to Aperture 3 photo editing and file management. It never leaves my desk, It is easy to follow and is excellent value. I would recommend this book to anyone using Aperture 3. Before I purchased this book I read snippets from it on line and I liked what I read. I felt that purchasing the book would provide with a much better knowledge and understanding of management and editing with Aperture 3 and I am pleased to say that I am not dissapointed in this respect.

disappointing
A very disappointing book. The authors may know their subject matter but they do not know how to put it across in an easily accessible way. Far too little space is devoted to how to process images and how to make the most of Aperture's processing tools. In the Kindle version many of the images used to illustrate a point are disassociated with the relevant text and the images of screen shots of dialog boxes are unreadable, even when enlarged to full screen. The book is also out of date as it mentions services no longer available, such as MobileMe. I have learnt more through trial and error using the software than through reading this book.

Aperture 3 Guide
I'm still reading this excellent manual. It is best used as a reference when using the program as it covers all aspects of Aperture but you need to use it regularly to benefit from the hidden treasures highlighted in the book. I would like to have seen more coverage of creating photobooks but otherwise it is comprehensive.
