Insects and Flowers: The Art of Maria Sibylla Merian Paperback – September 8, 2008

I have a larger book and even way smaller books documenting the Art of Maria Sibylla Merian. None of the tiny books or the giant ones have imagery this clear and of such extremely high quality as contained by this small book. The thing is these images are details! Perfect book for me, just maybe not for you!Amazon has for sale a giant facsimile book of the original printed in the lifetime of Maria Sibylla Merian in the range of $100.00. I sent that book back because the images I thought less useful to me than another book which is about 3 pounds and $25.00 also sold by Amazon.Artists may have a greater appreciation for this small book than those of you expecting something massive for the tiny list price of $9.99.

I read about a recent exhibition of her work and wanted the catalog, but it had to be shipped from Europe (at the time I was looking for it) and was quite expensive. I was very happy to find this tiny little book which is beautifully printed and offers up some very fine examples of her work. If you're interested in botanical art and in women's history, this is a nice addition to that teetering pile by your reading chair.

What a total waste of money. I can not believe that I was not smart enought to read the reviews on this totally worthless piece - shame on me. I would be ashamed as an author to put something out like this. Almost laughable - you got me!!

pretty little book

Worth having as a record of a little of the work of a truly remarkable natural historian and artist. I would have appreciated more text and a few reproductions of entire paintings.

I love the art of Maria Sibylla Merian and had planned to fashion a calendar with the plates from this book. I was surprised it was so small, but I still love the book - it is high quality and beautiful!!

Beautiful little book with interesting information.

These are beautiful pictures but being bound in the middle of the picture takes away part of the image and leaves the 'divider' of being on two pages. It ruins the picturesIt is also very very small. I didn't measure but about 4 x 5 or 6 inches.This will probably not be satisfactory to the majority of those interested.

Dopo una bellissima trasmissione televisiva sull'artista volevo qualcosa per ricordarmi le sue opere. Si, il prezzo era molto abordabile ma pensavo tipo offerta Amazon. Invece un libricino che non dà minimamente il senso della sua opera.

A gift for my artistic DIL who loved this book

A great book for studying Merian's work, and looking at the finer details. The images are not of the full plates and just show close up portions of the artwork, which allows you to pick out details and line work that you may not have necessarily seen. Merian's work is beautiful and this book includes a variety of exotic insects and flowers. My only criticism is that I really wish there was more included! The quality of the actual book is superb, made with high quality thick paper. As a watercolourist/illustrator focusing on nature, I've found this little pocket size book really inspiring. Highly recommend.

This book should be bigger. Both in size and volume
