Happy with this knife (and sheath!)
I was looking for a basic, inexpensive, capable knife and the Gerber Spine fits the bill. The knife is compact, sturdy and sharp. The sharp curve the the blade's edge down to the point make it look shorter than it actually is. The handle is grippy and feels very good in the hand. The large lanyard hole, while I will most likely never use, does give it a distinctive look. Now the sheath, which is getting a lot of comments. I would always choose a leather sheath over a plastic one. BUT I like this one. It has a slim profile and is not some clunky shape the knife rattles around in. The retention tab is very good. It releases with a push of the thumb and I have not seen any signs of it loosening. Yes the clip is a little weird, primarily made for the lumbar strap on a back pack. But if you slide the clip down your waistband (not the belt) it seems quite secure. It has been for me anyway. And since the clip is so long the knife sits below your waistline, very comfortably. You even forget your are wearing it. Note to Gerber: since the clip seems to be attached to the sheath by small allen screws, perhaps you could include a belt loop or clip that can be used instead.I took a chance on this knife despite some doubts about the sheath and I am happy I did.

This is better than I expected.
I didn't want a rambo commie gutter, I just wanted an unassuming, compact knife with a useful profile and a sharp edge. This one also has this very nice grip on it... it won't get all slippery on you when dressing out game or doing chores in the wet.The sheath keeps the blade secure, and being plastic, I'm not too worried about exposing it to the elements. The clip that holds the whole thing to you is a bit suspect. Pay attention to the other reviewers that challenged it; my rig doesn't, so I don't have much of an opinion. It's literally the exact thing I was looking for, better than what I expected, and a really fair price for all of it.That's some Five Star stuff, right there.

Was Hoping for Five Stars
I really want to like this knife more than I do. First, the variety of fixed blade knives that can work as a rugged, straightforward outdoors or utility knife that push right up to but do not reach 4 inches in blade length is limited. This works nicely in that length category. The edge really fully encompasses the blade here and doesn't stop till nearly the handle. There is nothing overly stylized about the blade. It's very simple and plain - no unnecessary aesthetic design choices that would impede functionality on a short blade. My knife's sharpness out of the box is ok but could have been better (I purchased a Morakniv Pro Robust recently that was razor sharp out of the package for comparison). It has decent thickness and a sturdy full tang handle with a nice lanyard hole. And I really do love the rubberized, grippy handle. It fits great in my hand for typical use. And for the price, it's a great little low budget knife for the size. Not the best, but still pretty good. But yeah, the sheath, as some people are saying, is just badly designed. I had thought it was perhaps just a few unlucky users. But after testing, this seems very much a product design flaw. The retention on this thing is insane. The design idea of a thumb push on a hard plastic sheath to release the knife is a nice idea. But the devil is in the details, and the execution is really poor. Admittedly, I'm not a large, strong person, so I can only base this on my personal experience. Yours may vary. But I am not able to remove this knife from the sheath one handed.I find it releases reasonably well and without as much effort by pushing up against the thumb release with the side of my index finger instead of the tip of my thumb while holding the knife with my other hand, but this still creates an unnecessary hot spot outside of the knife even being used.As a hack, I've also found that simply tying a loop of thin cordage around the thumb release makes the release function much better by setting the release clip slightly farther away from the spine edge. I can easily release the knife one handed with my thumb via this hack. This leads me to believe that if the thumb release were slightly slimmer, or at least made of slightly more flexible plastic, it would work better. I'm a little concerned that this may be pushing the edge of the blade against the hard plastic sheath when removing or inserting the knife. But I do like the knife, so maybe this is worth a shot.

Great little knife for the price
Great little knife, at first I was worried about the steal quality but I found it holds a good edge and has a great handle, it forms great and is very non slick. My only gripe on this knife is the sheath, it holds the knife in great but the clip is a little loose, I fixed that by putting the top in the vice and that tightened it nicely although I wish it it could be ambidextrous or maybe if Gerber offer a leather option, overall a great knife and could make a good gift for Father’s Day or maybe a birthday present for you child.

Perfect for what I need
I bought this knife because I was needing something exactly like this:The sheath was the main reason I bought this knife. The clip on the back is what I was needing to secure on a bug out bag. And I read all the reviews and knew what I was getting into before I bought this. The material feels good. Not cheap material. The steel holds an edge really well. The handle won't slip out of my hand even if it's wet. This knife has gotten alot of flack for its sheath. Just know what you need. I needed this sheath and it worked out for me. If you are not positive on this sheath then don't buy it and hate it and write a bad review.I've already figured out a way to prevent the knife from coming unclipped from my bag.Not too crazy about the color options. Kinda wish Gerber could change that up.Overall it's a solid knife. I like Gerber because they cater to alot of audiences with good quality. Hopefully this review helps someone.
