Why did the alarm just wake me, even though the data shows oxygen and heart rate were never out of range?

I don't use the alarm option. May have been a sudden drop that you can barely see on the printout. Enlarge the printout and also check the alarm settings as well.

Has anyone used this device during the day for continuous recording?

If you are active, wearing it all day wouldn't be practical. I've used it while riding my bicycle (to see if that would put my heart in a bad way - it would, dang it). But it's clumsy to wear, and best to tape it on if doing anything even semi-active. I tape it on at night as well.

Does it record spot readings to history? Or does it only save continuous recordings?

It only records when "Record" is turned on. It does not record spot readings if "Record" is turned off. The memory will record as many segments as you want, short or long, up to a cumulative total of 72 hours.
