Amazing Little Device
I bought this item primarily because my husband has walking problems due to MS, including drop foot. It causes degenerative weakness of the muscles in his lower legs and a pronounced limp. I figured I could try it on my own persistent back pain too. I had heard that an electrical stimulation device is good for restoring muscle strength, if used at the right frequencies. At first we tried finding a good physical therapist willing to try it but were unable to find one close by. Plus my husband was hesitant. He's just not as aggressive as I am in searching out options, and I think the idea of giving himself a shock didn't sound too appealing. I was aware that this device is primarily marketed for only pain relief but the cost was so low I decided to start here. So I bought it as a way to show him that the shock wouldn't be uncomfortable and to see if it might even be effective. After years of nothing aside from diet yielding any improvement at all, this approach seems to be working very well. We have been very surprised and happy at the results. It arrived quickly, charged up in a few hours, and the instructions were easy to follow. We use it every other day along with regular massage for muscle cramps, alternating with regular physical therapy exercises on the off days. We use both the back and neck settings on his lower legs, strength level is around 10 to 15. These seem to be the most effective settings for causing the muscle contractions in his lower legs that we're looking for, without being uncomfortable. At first we could see some movement in the right leg but none in the left, his weakest leg, and kept adjusting the settings. After a few weeks, viola, movement. When we first noticed it, it was like little butterfly movement in the left toes. Now it is obvious these muscles are contracting, with the ankle and toes moving back about 1/2 inch or so in a regular rhythm. This doesn't sound like much, but believe me, it is. We were guinea-pigging him for two years on three bankrupting pharmaceutical regimens and various exercises for which the best hope was that he wouldn't get worse. He got worse anyway. Any actual increase in movement and strength is huge news.Because the main unit is only about the size of a cell phone and delivers a shock strong enough to contract the muscles pretty thoroughly, I assumed I would have to charge every few days at least, but no. Maybe once every four weeks so far, using it for 20-40 minutes every day or every other. I recharged it for the first time just recently.I'm an amateur at this sort of DIY home therapy, it's all trial and error and I am in no way qualified to offer our experience as a medical recommendation. I don't even think this is the type of usage this product is offered for, I think it's strictly for pain relief - which is does well in my experience, with my old cracked spine bones and whiplash injuries. But to watch my husband's severe MS-caused weakness improve even just a tiny bit? that is reason to rejoice. We're very pleased with this amazing little thing.

Works as promised
I purchased this to relieve lower back muscle strain symptoms. I had no experience with TENS unit relief until I got assistance from a chiropractor years prior for mid-back and neck problems. I'm not a regular visitor to his office, once or twice a year or less. I was always curious about buying one for myself. A friend told me he bought one on line and said it works very well so I decided to give it a try. The device my chiropractor employs is obviously much more industrial than this unit but I can state this is quite comparable. It shipped in short order and came with comprehensive instructions all in a nice cardboard box with a magnetic closure for storage. There is a reference sheet for proper placement of the pads in relation to the affected area you wish to treat. Proper pad placement is a must. I can't stress enough the importance of reading the user's manual completely before you begin. There are multiple options for intensity and rhythm of the modes as well as settings for the duration. It defaults to 20 minutes and you can increase or decrease the duration from there. It did give me relief from my discomfort. I use the same method as my chiropractor. An application of Biofreeze gel (or similar), localized heat, and the TENS unit. This is an effective trifecta to take the edge off and I did it several times a day as I was hurting pretty bad. To the point that lifting my legs while sitting almost caused me to buckle. I also bombed it with 800 mg (prescription dose) of Ibuprofen though I understand that may not be a good option for everyone. This unit packs enough juice to make your muscles visibly flex and jerk when you crank it up to the higher levels, same as the device at my chiropractor's office, but in a much smaller package. On another note, I forgot to register my device for the warranty for over a month but that was not a problem. Their web site was very easy to navigate and my Amazon order number entry populated the necessary fields on the warranty registration page. Numedics promised an extra supply of gel pads for registering my product and they delivered on their promise. My extra pads arrived in short order. I dropped it once, about 24 inches, onto a hard floor. It didn't break and still worked. Maybe I got lucky.I am very satisfied with the purchase and would recommend it to a friend.

As good as the professional units
I ordered the Tens Unit Machine Pulse Massager to continue working on my leg muscles while I'm going to a chiropractor. They use a commercial grade one on my legs twice a week while I'm in therapy and it works pretty well. This little device feels exactly the same as the unit they use on me in the office. Although the controller itself looks like a smart phone, it definitely isn't. It's a little cheap looking and not the most intuitive interface, but for the money it does a good job.
