Shapton Stones are Magical
I've used oilstones, waterstones, Arkansas stones, diamond stones, India stones, etc throughout my life, but the Shapton stones outshine them all. They're ceramic with even, precisely controlled grits. When sharpening, I can see the steel coming off the knife and hear as well as see if my angle is correct. They cut fast and are an immense pleasure to use. I took to them immediately because it was a wholly new sharpening experience for me.

Fantastic product, less useful to most
All of Shapton's products - the glass stones, the pro/ Kuromaku line and the accessories are excellent products you can purchase without any doubts. This stone is a bit of curiosity - it lies right between sharpening (800-3000Grit) and polishing stones(5000+). As such this product is somewhat unnecessary for most people, including myself. A particular Japanese knife of mine really shines at the 4000Grit. If you're going for a single stone purchase look at the 2000 gritstone from Shapton. For multiple stones you can't go wrong with a 1000 and 6000 combination.

Very fine grit stones.
Could use this stone for final polishing if so intended.Good mirror edge if you know how. I think many people's normal usage would suffice with this stone!
