Inferno: The Longfellow Translation

This used book was in like-new condition and carefully wrapped. Very pleased with my purchase!

I read part 1 (Inferno) when I was 20 when an Engineering student, why I don't know. Now that I'm much older and can truly appreciate it I picked it up and read all three of Dante's journeys: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso. Simply beautiful poetry constructed in a manner that makes one deeply think. Although most that haven't read it think it's purely a religious poem he does take potshots at organized religion and focuses more on an intellectual questioning of spiritual life whatever that may mean to each of us. It shows the genius of Dante as a thinker and with the pen. A MUST READ although certainly not an easy one in order to get the full understanding.

Great translation. Longfellow might sound a little old fashioned but so does Shskespeare. Anyway, there are audio recordings of this translation available in the public domain. This 57 year old guy is reading Dante for the first time.

The language is so beautiful and the story is absolutely gripping. I find myself absorbed in this book like an old fashioned thriller. I highly reccommend it.

A Classic; it certainly gives one viewpoint of what hell must be like, though from a Christian standpoint, is probably not comparable to the real hell that awaits the unbeliever. Well written, and easy enough to understand the language for most, yet I would tend to restrict its reading to teenagers and above. From a pure literate standpoint, it will surely make the reader want to delve into their innermost passions and beliefs about themselves, and one will draw from their own personal reading just what it means to them in terms of each individual's life.

This translation was a little hard for me to follow, but none the less a nice addition to my collection.

I wanted a copy of Dante's Inferno with the original Longfellow translation - and here it is! The translation is smooth, the book is great and it even has footnotes and endnotes to help understand some of the historical/theological/mythical background. Great book!

I was always interested in Longfellow's translation of Dante and thought, while I was on rereading Dante for a project, to finally check it out. Like Chapman's Homer, it's interesting for its time, but it's never going to be one that one returns to; in the last century plus there are some very good translations, and even those of us who struggle with Italian would rather have any bilingual edition. You won't be in the 9th circle reading this, but you've definitely not made it to Paradiso.

Ich habe nach wenigen Seiten aufgegeben. Zwar war es einer der größten amerikanischen Poeten, Longfellow, der diese Inferno-Übersetzung ins Englische gemacht hat, aber er hat aus Dantes Terzinen wieder Verse gemacht. Das Ergebnis ist qualvoll unleserlich. Das wäre wahrscheinlich auch im Deutschen so, ich kenne bloß keine deutsche Inferno-Übersetzung in Versen. Statt dessen habe ich mir die (sehr empfehlenswerte) neue zweisprachige Prosaübersetzung von Hartmut Köhler zugelegt.Es sind nur wenige schwarzweiße Bilder in der Ausgabe, allerdings sind diese wirklich schön. Kommentare gibt es nicht.
