Q: Do I have to reset the color I want every time I turn the lights on or does it remember the last setting?

Mine remembers the last color setting & brightness. After turning off, then back on, it's always the same color that I had on before turning it off. And if I had a color changing pattern on, then turn off, it also remembers that setting when I turn it back on again. And I like that for single colors, if I change the brightness for 1 or more colors. it will also remember those brightness settings. The person who said theirs always starts on red is likely using a color changing setting not a single color, mine does that also for color changing, starts on red, but for single colors it remembers those. Example; Had solid green on last, then turn off, turn back on and you'll have green again.

Q: can you cut the light strip? I only need one foot

Dear, thank you for your question. This rope lights consists of 5 parallel units, 3.28 feet each. It can only be cut from the junction of two units, so the shortest is 3.28 feet, not 1 foot. And only the one with male plug can be used, and the other one cannot. This leads to waste and not waterproof. Do not recommend cutting. You'd better buy other products that can be cut.
