A real gem of a book
A classic and humorously written book that gives some genuinely helpful pointers and other laughable social rules. I was inspired by this book to stop sending texts or messages online and instead to write people thank you notes, invitations, changes of address by hand on beautiful writing paper. Lovely to have on the bookshelf and arrived in reasonable time. Hard to find on the high street but a real gem.

When Doing Things Right Matter
When faced with an impending problem of how to eats some garden peas, I knew just where to turn! Seriously though, this is a jolly interesting read and is a book that is bound to prove its worth somewhere along the line.I bought it because I had borrowed a copy when I had a rather tricky letter to write and it came up trumps then. You look a bit of a chump if you leave it on your coffee table by mistake though! Its good fun testing 'posh' people too!

Almost Excellent Book
The book met my expectation. It is really detailed and covers a lot. It is in two parts. In summary, Part 1, covers Rites of Passage including births, baptism, other childhood ceremonies, engagement, weddings, separation and divorce, remarriage, deaths funerals and so on.Part 2 covers Social Life which includes royal, diplomatic, other formal occasions, the written and spoken word, in private: conduct of personal relationships, in public: manners out and about, entertaining, country weekend, relationship with domestic staff, business manners, table manners, dress and ends with correct forms of address. It depends on what you need the book for, I am a visual learner, while there are illustrations of letters, announcements there are no sketches or pictures. I was unhappy that the copy I bought has a full page inscription on the inside page that shows that it was a gift between two people. The seller could have stamped it as sold by..... or something.

A wonderful book and an excellent addition to anybody's home library.
I have only just begun to read the book and I am incredibly intrigued and I am hooked! I was so lucky to have been able to purchase this book at the price I did. Definitely worth the money spent though. It really is an eye opener and provides a feast of food for thought. It Will definitely be a wonderful talking point and reference book for years to come.

Needs an update
Much of the information is useful, though many modern developments proceed it now. Still, some traditional snipets of advice can still be applied if you don't know a certain arcane thing, such as letter writing which many have forgotten how to do properly in the age of email and texting.

An almost timeless guide
I love this book! It came in a very good condition. Apart from its timeless advice for all kinds of social occasions, it is easy and funny to read (even for non-native speakers). It is focused on the British high-society, so some things might not apply to other cultures. At the end of the book, there is a long list of how to address the English aristocracy which might be valuable to anybody who is lucky enough to invite them to a social event. It's certainly a good book to have on the coffee table.
