Do not expect to see anything like this on a PBS nature show!
A valuable window into 1931 American cultural history and movie film making! While I have no doubt college film courses will given opportunity, dissect this historical gem to the point of ad nauseum, do not overlook that this film is GREAT FUN. Actor Harry Carey and his heroic gun bearer, Mutia Omoolu, drip testosterone. "Baby Boomers" will see The Cisco Kid, Duncan Reynaldo, in an early role before riding with Pancho. The wildlife?, ah yes the wildlife.. a treat. Don't forget Edwina Booth playing a blond pagan goddess, scantily adorned in what appears to be monkey fur?. Lastly the lore surrounding this film is as interesting as the film itself. Recommended for those not stunted and prone to judge through a"politically correct" lens. Enjoy.

The Hunting Trip
Good story about an African safari made in about 1931. Especially good to see were the scenes showing large herds of wildlife that are becoming all to rare today with all the hunting and poaching, This stars Harry Carey in a rare starring rather than supporting role.

Nobody Would Have the Guts to Remake This Today!
And that's too bad. Definitely not a PC movie but I bet Hollywood dreams about making one this good! It's got everything in it. Yes, there is some racist language and abuse of people. But it also has a prominent display of Love & Loyalty between two comrades that cares naught for their different races and in fact makes a hero out of a black man in a movie made when most blacks could not even vote! I wonder how it played in Selma? The story is kinda dated, but still exciting. This movie cries out to be remade but I doubt anyone ever will and that's a shame. FIVE STARS!!!!!

white goddess.
I have been wanting this movie for more years than I can count. I remember seeing it as a kid at the drive in with my folks. It was made before I was born, but it really holds up as a good movie. This dvd is very good as for picture and sound. Of course it is an old movie and has a few spots and things. All said and done the copy is good enough for me. The story is of a white child raised by African tribe as a goddess. She must escape with Trader Horn and a very young Cisco Kid. Romance follows of course and lots of adventure. I loved it and will watch many times I am sure.

Great Movie!
Original black and white film makes this priceless. Absolutely politically incorrect by today's modern liberal standards. Nonetheless, it shows things the way they were. Interestingly though, the main character Horn, had a deep respect and affection for his black aid, and without him the expedition would have been impossible. Others have reviewed this movie and explain the details as I would, so I'll stop now....

Glad I finally saw this film
Glad I finally saw this film. Although it is badly dated and thematically uneven, the film is a must-see for those familiar with Edwina Booth's career and for those who love jungle adventure films. Definitely pre-code and not politically correct. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend it for pre-teens. It was still fun guessing which shots were filmed in Africa and which were filmed at M-G-M based on Harry Carey's hat, jacket, and hair length.

Rare Classic Adventure Movie
This film was made 1931 so it's really amazing having a good copy of this one. "Trader Horn" takes some time until it starts getting interesting. We see endless shots of landscapes and animals, shot on location in Africa. Back then, the audience had never seen such scenes before.Edwina Booth is one of the most beautiful women of all times. Unfortunately she's a real bad actress. Nevertheless this film is worth watching and the scenes when people cross a river full with crocodiles (and one of them gets eaten alive) are still scary today. Harry Carey is a great leading man and he is very convincing in his role as Alfred "Trader" Horn. Very nice is the romance between Edwina Booth's character and Horn's partner Peru although Trader has also and eye on the girl but leaves her to his younger partner .Carey and Booth were both reunited the same year in the fantastic serial "The Vanishing Legion". "Trader Horn" is a very rare adventure movie and really worth a look!

considering year made - a good film
Watched a VHS version of this film many years ago with my father, it was made in 1931, and despite the overacting in some places is still enjoyable - if only for the clothes they were wearing in the jungle!
