What Color Is My World?: The Lost History of African-American Inventors

Buy This Book for Your Kids-No Matter Who You Are
This isn't your typical "black history" book. First and foremost, it's a story for tweens, pre-tweens, savvy elementary school readers or parents who want their kids to learn about about some really smart inventors past and present, who just happen to be African-American.The book is colorful, eliciting an "Oh, look how beautiful," from my 7-year old (truly an advanced reader), and was interesting enough to grasp her attention from the first page. There's the story, and then there are the fold-outs, featuring great tidbits about the featured inventor.Frankly, I wasn't sure how much of a children's book I'd get by a "former basketball star," but Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and his co-authors have produced a well researched, well written product that makes learning history fun. Again, it's colorful, there's a great story to link it all together, and it's a fantastic reference book that will get and hold their attention.Certainly, buy the book if you're African-American, but buy it first and foremost to teach your children that there were and still are great American inventors who have created extraordinary things that we use in everyday life. You'll be glad you did. What Color Is My World?: The Lost History of African-American Inventors

Not what I expected- chapter book
This is a chapter book and from previous pictures and reviews I was expecting a picture book. It appears to be around a 3rd grade level. The information on inventors is typically a page per inventor. I included a picture of what inventors the book covers

How Did I Miss This Book So Long?
I got this after I saw that fantastic Conversation with Tyler where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar just talked for an hour. What an amazing guy! This book is a fast but really, really important read. I cannot imagine why it was not picked up and discussed more. Just sorry the packaging is lower end, it deserves a higher order treatment. I hope sometime it is reissued but for now, for you, get it and read it. A great insight into a whole different angle on entrepreneurs and genius than is typically covered.

African American scientists and inventors get their due in a book for children encouraging them to use their brains.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar helps explain some of the contributions of African Americans in science and invention. Too many folks are unaware of these wonderful people who have helped make our world what it is today. African Americans are not merely entertainers or athletes, we are scientists, inventors, and folks who use our brains for the good of all mankind. This book is written for children to start the message early. It is great as a gift for African American children but really is good for any child, the story is the same. I would rather have my children have heros in science than entertainment and sports.

Great for kids to learn history.
This is a beautiful tale of two African American children learning about African American inventors who are far too often neglected. It's a childrens book, so don't expect deep material, but I highly recommend it for children.

Lovely book! Paper back is black and white ;)
Bought it for my little brother's 11th birthday. He's a bit beyond the reading level in regards to the story, but he's really into science and the factual parts seem to be advanced enough to engage him. My only peeve was I stupidly didn't realise the color pictures were only in the hardback version LOL. Was a bit disappointed because the images were lovely and the colour would have been a good break from the text. Oh well, he's a big boy now I guess. Book itself is of nice quality, text is well spaced with an easy to read font. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.
