Great easy read and very informative. Good layout!
I obtained this book as part of studying for the National Academy of Sports Medicine Fitness Nutrition Specialist credential. I really liked the book in all aspects: its order of topics, its presentation of information, the number of charts/graphs includes, the 'going green' and other special sections, and the writing style. Information was clearly presented which not only helped understand new topics but helps to use the book as a reference. I expected the book to provide information on practically helping design meal plans for clients (in part owing to NASM's advertising of their FNS course). While this information was in the book it was scattered throughout it. The book was very technical (it covered each mineral and vitamin individually and discussed the specific absorption process of each macronutrient). However many of the topics I knew already from taking biology courses in high school and at university. Even if you are already familiar with some of these topics from biology courses as I was this book is still a good read as it puts them in a nutrition context. This book will remain on myself as a reference book. I would recommend this book for professionals or students. It is not really for lay people as a guide to getting healthy, unless said person has a specific detailed interest in the topic. One could certainly 'get healthy" from reading this book, but there are other books that present the topics in a more end user friendly style if that is your sole purchase intention.

Great Info!
I bought this book as a hardcover addition to my studies with NASM's Fitness Nutrition Specialist course. If you're a hands-on reader and study person like me, this book and the special **MVP** surprise (read below) is for YOU!I literally read the book cover-to-cover straight through, over the span of a couple months. Lots of informational tables and "Did You Knows?" for future reference. Yes, I like to read and soak up information. Don't buy a textbook if you don't like to learn! :-)MOST VALUABLE THING **MVP** THAT COMES WITH THIS BOOK: The "Electronic Student Study Guide" is available with every new text at no additional cost with purchase - I promise you...it's a lot of ink, but PRINT OUT THE STUDY GUIDE FOR EACH CHAPTER and use it to read along and take notes! It's very hands-on and you will learn the concepts inside out. I even went as far as to draw out mind-maps on the back of each chapter guide to make sure I understood the concepts completely. This 5th edition has MORE chapters than the NASM course tested me on, so I kept on reading after I finished the certification. Yes, I'm a nerd. Yes, I'm proud of it. Yes, this book helped me to make more money at my job and help people lose weight and change their lives. I think that's a win-win!

A good starting place for anyone interested in nutritional science
PROS: There is a lot of good information in this book. The format is multidisciplinary which allows the reader to make numerous associations beyond the text. This is good for the learning process because it allows the reader to approach the subject from multiple points of view.CONS: The excessive use of industry-specific acronyms can slow down the reading at times. The pages are thin so the reader has to be a little bit careful when handling them. The print is rather small at times and may be challenging for some vision impaired readers.SUMMARY: The thin pages and small print are likely cost-cutting measures and do not detract very much from the overall good quality of this text. I am reading it for personal, professional and academic reasons. So far I am very happy and consider this book to a good starting place for anyone interested in nutritional science.

Run of the mill.
I've only read a few chapters. This book seems to be a run of the mill introduction to nutrition. I'm using it for NASM FNS and its a little frustrating that it seems to have very little to do with fitness nutrition since its the book they based their fitness nutrition course on. I've read a few nutrition textbooks and I have to say, this one is pretty dull so far but the information is ok. If you're buying this book for NASM, there are plenty of cheap used copies available that will save you money over their deal.

Great textbook.
I have found this to be a really useful textbook in my first year of a Nutrition degree. The information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, and the way it relates to real world examples is particularly interesting.
