Hard Read

The book was excellent. It was informative and gave awesome detail in the years of the Witch trials. It was difficult to read as the author used actual sources so some of the source pages were torn and sentences would lag off. Over all though, highly recommend the book to anyone curious about witches, what they went through and how witchcraft was viewed way back

This was such a good book. A historic and fascinating deep dive into the witchcraft trials of New England (and a few from the old country too). It's not a novel with easy storytelling type reading but actual trial excerpts. The older transcripts were "harder" to follow but nonetheless interesting. Katherine Howe's notes lend an important view and explanation into some of the terminology and thinking of the day.

A Look into the Dark Days of Witch Hunts

An interesting and intriguing look into a dark time in our history. Especially interesting and intriguing, if you have ancestors from colonial Massachusetts; more so if they were actually part of the witch trials! This is a serious book and does not sensationalize; that's not needed; the stories are something in and of themselves. Ms. Howe presents a bit of historical background to give perspective to the stories of the individuals who were involved. Perhaps the book could be considered a "primer" on the topic.I am enjoying the read and look forward to following up the leads so I can better know my ancestors.

Unfamiliar sources, mixed in with well known cases.

This is also smaller than expected; but contains a good variety of sources; including Elizabeth Knapp , of Groton, mentioned, not in detail, in The Witches. Elizabeth Howe is herself descended from two accused witches of Salem; which might explain her interest. She includes a list for further reading- which I intend to do.

Thanks to Amazon

Bought as a birthday gift from her Amazon wish list. It's good to know I'm giving someone something they actually want. Usually my gifting is, "I think maybe she possibly might sort of ..." Thank you Amazon.
