fluency
I haven't heard Santana's music for many years, and was surprised to learn, for some reason! that Santana is an abbreviation for Santa Ana or St Anne. The music is played with extraordinary fluency so that it lifts off the album and creates a sound universe of its own. It reminds me of my psychedelic days when I became unclear about how much of the experienced world is a projection of our complex minds and how much of it is some extraordinarily flexible otherness on which our minds work. In this curiously destabilising way, the music points beyond itself to the transcendent realm. When the universe seems fluid some higher divine power suggests itself as the sure and restful place of stability. The skill of Santana is to generate this sense of instability that points beyond itself. This music is, for its period, only surpassed by Pete Green's compositions. But certainly I am listening to this Santana album a lot at the moment.

Monumental album and essential in any music collection.
This second Santana album should be very high in any list of top albums, whether it's a list of Jazz/Fusion/Rock/Prog/World/Latin or just best music albums' list.Since my stereo equipment is far from being high end I won't refer to the quality of the remaster but for me it sounds great.Regarding the 3 extra tracks, I find them non-essential and not in the highest recording quality, and certainly wouldn't buy the disc just for them. The box comes with a nice small booklet containing information about Santana's first years and the album. The disc itself is painted plain red and not as Max's juicy image on the Customer Images section. Pity. I wonder if that's due to some puritans' complaints. Could have been much nicer. Reminds me of the scene from Life of Brian where the Judean People's Front (or was it the People's Front of Judea..) emerge from the sewer in Pilate's palace.. ;-))Well, whatever, I'll have to do with the pleasure for my ears only...

Mobile Fidelity SACD
Finally received this disc the other day after a short delay - it was not available until a week or so after its supposed release date (not a great problem seeing as I first became aware of an intended Mofi SACD release over two years ago). I have a good number of SACDs (classical/jazz/rock) and most compare pretty well with the vinyl when I have the same work on both formats (the Patricia Barber 'Café Blue' I reviewed recently is such a case). This time around I think the vinyl (Mofi, single disc) sounds better by some margin - everything seems better controlled and has more 'air' - I might have to investigate other editions!I have loved the music on this album since I bought it 46-odd years ago when the LP first came out (I was still at school!) and I think there must be a definitve version out there - it's just not this SACD!

Love Santana
This is Santana’s real breakthrough album. Brilliant from start to finish.

Santana are my favourite band. I first saw them live in 1973 and saw them again, for the 7th time, last year. I have had all their CDs bar this one as I had almost all the tracks in their live or collection CDs. However when they played Hope You're Feeling Better last year (1st time live that I recall), which I did not have, I decided to complete my collection. The first 4 Santana albums are the classic ones. Abraxas was No.2. It has a number of their classics: Samba Pa Ti, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va,Incident at Neshabur etc. This CD also has the benefit of having remastered tracks and a couple of live bonus tracks.

Special album
This is an album I had on cassette as a teenager; I've finally got around to replacing it. Great guitar playing from Carlos Santana, great Latin rhythms from the band. Highlights for me include Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, originally written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, who guests on this track, and the laid back Samba Pa Ti

Fantastic Sound!
This review is for the Japanese SACD that includes the quadraphonic mixes, although my personal listening is limited to the stereo layer.I have 9 different releases of this album in various formats, including both the Mobile Fidelity releases (GAIN2 and 45 RPM UltraDisc 1 Step) on LP and this sounds the best! (Online reviews have said similar things about the quad mix.) If you like this album as much as I do, you owe it to yourself to listen to this version. You won't be sorry! If you haven't done so already, take the plunge and purchase an SACD player. Not only are many great albums such as this being released in that format, but the sound is the closest to vinyl, sometimes (like in this case) even better!
