Review: Great Choice to get - Love this bread slicer! it works great, it can be closed with just 2 turns and lays flat. I have my on top of the fridge and the crumb tray is so easy to clean. I looked at several kinds and this was the best one for our family. Review: Best bang for the buck if your looking for a bread slicer - I used this thing first chance I got. It folds away very nicely and helps cut perfect slices. Only issue is not the fault of the device but you really want to use a 10” bread knife. You can do it with an 8” but it’s much easier with a 10”. Love the included bags too. This was also the best priced one and it still works great.

Slicing
The slicer itself is great I think, but don't really know for sure because when I try to slice the bread, the bread smashes. I can't slice thin slices, only bigger ones. I'm using a long serrated knife and it should be sharp enough and good enough to make decent cuts. The bread slicer needs to be made so the width can be made smaller or larger so the loaf can't move while cutting. I looked at a lot of slicers and as far as I know, I'd be having the same trouble with them. Do I need a special knife?

Will not fold for storage
When this item arrived, the sides were folded against the bottom. I set them upright, inserted the back piece, and tried slicing my bread. However, I was not able to slice all the way to the bottom of the loaf. Looking again at the photo of the item, I quickly realized that I needed to raise the sides on the other (raised) side of the item. I did this, and the bread sliced fine. Unfortunately, now I cannot get the sides to budge, in order to fold them down again on the other side. They seem to be locked in place. Now storage has become difficult, as the item will not fold flat to the underside anymore. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Works nice!
For my purposes, baking average-size bread loafs, this works quite well. I was a bit surprised by the negative reviews. It's sturdy, well packaged, and easy to use and set up. The slices come out even, and my loafs fit it just fine. It seems easy to clean and the crumbs fall nicely into the bottom pan. I use a bread knife that is more than long enough to span the width for slicing. I did heed the comment about splinters, but with a little practice, that's not an issue. I love how it folds up for easy storage.

Guess what absolutely doesn't work with bamboo?
In theory, I thought this was a good idea. I bought it more for the foldable aspect of the slicer rather than really thinking through the fact that a big serrated bread knife would be slicing on bamboo, a very soft wood. Also, the frame for the bread slicer is almost too wide, which makes slicing bread through it very tricky - a long bread knife is just barely long enough to navigate across the bread between the guides. I cut exactly 2 slices of bread before the edge of my knife hit the wood and I had splinters all up in my bread. It doesn't take much force to do this, literally it takes just a nick and the wood slivers right off. Terrible design.

Pros and cons for bread slicer
The big pro is that I can now slice my bread in uniform slices. The bread slicer makes it easy as long as you have a 10” bread knife. The only con is that it did not come with instructions on how to use it. You have to fold the knife guides over until they drop into a slot. I figured it out by looking at the product illustration on Amazon’s product page. Am very happy overall so rated it with 5 stars.

Poor Design
The guide does not help you slice to the bottom of the loaf, and it would have been so easy to extend the vertical openings down below the bottom of the loaf to do this. The opening in the plastic sleeves are too small to fit the common 2-pound loaf size. Granted they are a free extra, but I threw them away. They suggest oiling it with olive oil, but I read that will turn rancid, and mineral oil is better. In my case, I don't plan to get it wet so will not oil it at all. I might just slice my bread without using the guide.

This item is pretty cool once we figured out how to use it. Beware as there are no instructions on usage. There are instructions on care, cleaning and seasoning though. This item was a gift for my mom as she makes all her own bread and its hard to slice even slices.
