Q: I recently bought a pair of these and the one that works only works at night and the other one only turns on when you install the batteries. What am I doing wrong?

I havn't had this issue and I cannot say why one only works at night - but the second part confuses me as they always go on when you install the batteries. I would e-mail Mr. Beams customer service - they seem pretty responsive in case you haven't tried them yet.

Q: Will this turn on even when it's not dark in the kitchen? I want it to provide extra under-the-cabinet even when the lights are on.

They only turn on when it's dark enough. I don't think they'll do what you want out of the box, but I have read about people taping off part of the light sensor which makes them turn on with movement at brighter light levels.

Q: Would an increase in visible light activate these without motion? Would opening a dark closet cause these lights to turn on? (I hope so!)

These great lights are motion activated and stay on for a set number of seconds - essentially short and longer. The really nice feature is that they will not turn on at all if the sensor judges there is already enough available light to see - the unit has a threshold pre-set at the factory. So an increase in light would have no immediate effect (but will prevent activation with motion if the increase in light brings the total light above the sensor's threshold). Opening a dark closet would turn the light on if the unit is close enough to the moving door and if the total light remains below the threshold. For example, I have two in my garage. During the day when the overhead door is open, the lights don't do a thing as there is already enough available light. But at night, they go on when they sense my motion and turn on.

Q: Can I hang this with a Command strip?

Yes. I would recommend the 3lb or 5lb strip due to the weight with the batteries.
