2 States (2014) by Abhishek Verman, is based on the 2009 book bearing the same name, written by Chetan Bhagat. This super hit movie is the second highest overseas grosser of Bollywood in 2014. It stars Arjun Kapoor as Krish Malhotra, Alia Bhatt as Ananya Swaminathan and Amrita Singh as Kavita (Krish's Punjabi mother).Abhishek Verman's movie starts in the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Krish is from a hardcore Punjabi family, whereas Ananya is a Tamil Brahmin. The two of them are doing their MBA at the institution and they become good friends. Soon love blossoms between the North Indian and South Indian friends and the two of them move in together. All goes well for two years until they make a plan to get married after graduation. Krish and Ananya decide that only after getting the blessings of both set of parents, will they tie the knot. At the convocation ceremony, the Malhotras and the Swaminathans meet for the first time. From the start, things start to sour between the two families. The conservative Tamilians are shocked at the behaviour of the Punjabis. Krish and Ananya are heartbroken and they both move to their respective hometowns, Delhi and Chennai. Not long after, Krish takes up a job in Chennai to get closer to the Swaminathans and to move away from his mother who insists on his marrying a Punjabi girl. While in Chennai, Krish starts to get along well with Ananya's family. They finally agree to the relationship and so the couple goes to Delhi to seek Krish's parents' approval. Finally, Krish and Ananya get engaged and the wedding is just around the corner. However, all hell breaks loose when Kavita starts to openly complaint and crib about Tamilian culture. Krish and Ananya give up and the engagement is called off. Abhishek Verman's film is light-hearted, yet takes readers into the realities of Indian beliefs and cultures.Abhishek Verman, the director, has adapted the smooth flow of the book into this movie. 2 States's songs have been composed by the brilliant trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
