I have been needing one of these for some time. Most were too small or too expensive. This one worked well on the bolt I cut. Time will tell.

Happy with this tool. Had many lag-bolts that were far longer than they needed to be once the deck was installed, and just hacking off the excess left dangerous sharp burrs and edges. This tool did a passable job of smoothing things out to the point wear new nuts can even still be threaded onto the bolt. It didn't do the smoothest job, but the bolt sharp edges are all gone to the touch and they work for threading again.Gave it 4 stars because after only the 6 bolts that needed done, it was very clearly showing signs of wear that I believe will effect it's use.It worked really well for this job and probably would for a few more, but for the price, only getting a few jobs out of it is probably par for the course.

One of those items that you don't use everyday, but when you need it, it's very handy.

I tried to use it to bevel the edges on 3/8" aluminum rod, using a standard electric drill on drill mode at slow speed. The first 5 ends were ok but then the cutting head stripped the threads of the shank. Now it's garbage.I bought a different brand cheap one that is a one piece design and have had no problems.

I was surprised I could use this without clamping my bolt into a vice. I was able to make a small stud using a cheap 1/4-20 bolt. Just held it with my hand and achieved decent results so the blades appear to be aligned well. Took off a star because it’s a multi piece tool and some of the screwed on pieces did come loose and needed to be retightened. Would be 5 star if it was all one piece.

The great benefit of this tool is that it cannot only save a bolt that you may have cross threaded or was damaged in some other way. It could save a loose nut, welded on nut, fixed furniture type nut, or even more importantly, a machined bolt hole that someone may try to force a cross threaded bolt into.What I meant by the headline is just for starters. Those with the least mechanical experience are far more likely to damage threads because they can tend to be a bit overzealous when encountering a hard to seat thread/hard angle/blind spot bolt to thread that those with more experience. Thuse, they have a higher percentage of damaged threads. (Been there done that! :-) )Overall, we found this to be a great product that was a quick fix that prevented a 1 1/2 round trip to the hardware store to replace a single damaged bolt on our Bimini top to our Pontoon bolt. Make sure you wear the suggested safety gear of gloves, safety glasses, etc., etc. because there will be plenty of sharp metal shards. Make sure you secure the bolt head properly.The angle of cut into the bolt seems a bit steep at first, making the tip both a bit sharper than expected, especially if you get carried away trying to smooth out your burr, but in order to avoid a tool that flanges out at unwieldy and unsafe angles, it seems to be an unavoidable evil. Keep a fine file on hand for a finishing touch if required and you can cut too deep into your bolt.There is one application I don't recommend you use this for. Several applications use those so called "Nylon Lock Nuts" with special purpose bolts, such as higher end cooler legs, or for machine cut/made welded on nuts meant for special purposes.Two examples I can think of in our case are our Portable Electric Cooler, and the Door Lift, for my Adaptive Truck. I've had the nuts come off in both instances. Even filing would be shorting the bolt thread even shorter, so it comes off sooner if they were damaged as the nut is knocked.
