Anyone can use this!
The rope on my snowplow winch broke. The braided line was strong, but after two years of plowing, it wore out. I cut off about five foot of line and used the fid to repair it the same day it arrived. It worked great!!!

Perfect fit and strong bond. The 4 is because to the razor sharp edge, which I’ve since sanded down after I cut myself lifting the hood of my ‘16 Explorer Ltd.

Missing Hook
I have a long history with using this type of hollow fid for splicing rope. A common difficulty in this work occurs in splicing double braid rope. When inserting the cover braid int the core braid (or the other way around) the space needed can get tight. When I saw this fid set, I noticed that they appeared to made of thinner metal. I wondered if this might be helpful for tight fits. It is, but I found that a hook--used to grip the braid being inserted--was missing. On the original product, these hooks grip the braid pulling it behind the fid as it passes trough. To make full use of these fids, some way of binding the pulled braid must be created. The topic is not addressed in the product instructions. If you are handy with metal, you may form the missing hooks. Also needing to be mentioned, I find I sometimes slip hollow fids through a knot or loop to use in pulling on a rope. It appears to me that the thin-walled fids might be vulnerable to being bent. These will become a part of my tool kit, once I supply the missing hooks.

Very high quality and finish on these fids
These are made from seamless thin stainless steel tube; the cut edges are finished very smoothly so there are no fiber snags in use. If you're using the cheaper plastic fids like I've been doing, order these and toss the plastic ones in the recycle because they are junk. These steel fids are pro-level gear. Yes, they are expensive, but they are such a pleasure to use you will be glad you spent the money for them.
