The base is heavy and sturdy. The rest of the lamp is in 3 or 4 parts: the pole part of the lamp has integrated wires so you just screw them together, making sure the part with the plug is screwed into the base. The piece with the touch on/off/dim switches can be in the middle of the lamp or near the top, I believe. The light itself is large and gives off great light for reading. This won't light up a whole room.
