Tyrone Power and Company are in good form throughout this long production lasting some 2 hours 15 minutes. The story line is a little difficult to unravel so repays a second and third viewing. Those who might have hoped to see Power in swashbuckling form will be disappointed since the only piece of swordsmanship is near the beginning of the film and is very brief - enough to wet your appetite and little more! Some fine scenic shots throughput the duration. Excellent value.

Ty looks great in it! Plus wonderful colour photography, epic music and truly unique, legendary last scene.

I was delighted to discover that this film was available on dvd, and equallydelighted with the quality (vision and sound) of this product. I can thoroughlyrecomment this film to anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned adventure.

I saw this many years ago while serving in RAF in S Rhodesia and enjoyed it then and again now even if it is a little dated.No one can replace the golden years of Hollywood that this film represents even with today's advanced technology

A very good quality film on DVD, very impressed

This is a rather long film that is a bit boring. Tyrone Power (De Vargas) has a rivalry with the Spanish Inquisition in the form of John Sutton (De Silva). Both want to see each other dead. The film begins in Spain, moves to Cuba and then ends up in South America as the Cortez Expedition begins its annihilation of the Aztec culture. This, of course, is glazed over as it is Hollywood. Instead, the film curiously ends with the blood-thirsty Spanish pirates marching on to carry out their criminal pillaging of Mexican culture whilst we get an American message of how the good and great are just around the corner. What an offensive load of nonsense!A few reviews have described this as some sort of swashbuckling epic. No, it’s not. There is one sword fight at the beginning of the film and that’s it. It does contain the funniest moment of the film, however, when Tyrone flicks Sutton’s hat off with the tip of his sword. Cool move.The cast are all fine and if Caesar Romero had been given a larger part as the invading leader Cortez, he would have walked away with the film as his star power seems to project itself more than main man Tyrone Power. I’m not sure why they went to the trouble of filming this in colour – it just doesn’t seem worth it. The most memorable thing about the film is the smoke bellowing out of a volcano in the background. And there you have it – the background is the best thing about the film. A pretty bogus state of affairs.

DVD received Friday, November 17 in very good condition. No complaint.

Bon film des années 40 sur la période de l’inquisition et les débuts de l’expédition de Cortez au Mexique. Belles couleurs et tourné en extérieur sur les lieux des événements. Excellente interprétation.

Superproduction de la 20th Century Fox, cet Henry King conte les aventures de Tyrone Power, noble espagnol qui fuit l'Inquisition (elle tue sa petite soeur et emprisonne ses parents) et qui rejoint Cuba et Hernan Cortez pour la conquête du Mexique (nous sommes au XVIe siècle). C'est donc la période où l'Espagne conquérait le monde à la recherche d'Or. Ils rencontrent les Astekes et vont les tuer et les voler. L'Inquisition le rattrapera au Mexique.Tyrone Power, dans un rôle, comme souvent, de quelqu'un de bon, respectueux des autres, et pas du tout le super héros sur de lui en permanence. Le love interest, Jean Peters, est pas trop lourd. Lee J. Cobb est le faire valoir sympathique (nous avons plus l'habitude de voir Lee J. Cobb en policier en ville en mode polar, qu'en collant et short).Le film bénéficie de décors réels et a été tourné sur les lieux des évènements racontés. Le film contient quelque moment de violence assez surprenant comme l'assassinat de la petite fille, ou le combat de chiens avec Jean Peters juste à côté, ou Tyrone Power qui tue de sang-froid l'Inquisiteur, parmi d'autres.Grand film d'aventure donc, avec un Tyrone Power finalement très intéressant et acteur méconnu: toujours crédible sans en faire des tonnes, et qui arrive à faire passer des émotions avec peu de mimiques.

Un film brillant qui nous entraîne sur les pas du conquistador Cortez au Mexique. Le héros (superbement interprété par Tyrone Power) se trouve aux prises avec la terrible Inquisition avant de tenter sa chance outre Atlantique. Trahisons, rébellion, duels, rien n'y manque, et l'on ne peut que se laisser séduire par l'héroïne, une humble paysanne amoureuse de son fier seigneur, rôle dévolu à Jean Peters, dont c'était la première apparition à l'écran. La reconstitution est parfaite: costumes somptueux (notamment lors de l'ambassade aztèque), décors naturels grandioses (le film fut tourné au Mexique là où Cortez débarqua ). Pour résumer, un excellent film à regarder en famille!

Impossible de connaitre les langues du film avant l'achat. J'ai ensuite découvert que le film était soit en VO avec sous-titres en français, soit en français... les éditions précédentes offraient les sous-titres en anglais (VO) et autres langues. Bref, une édition au rabais. Je ne suis pas compétente sur la qualité de l'image.La présentation du film en 4e de couverture est passablement mensongère, mais en général les acheteurs de ce genre de film sont informés à l'avance sur le contenu réel du film

Une grande fresque tournée au Mexique par le grand Henry KING avec son acteur Tyrone POWER et une débutante en la personne de Jean PETERS. Des longueurs, peu d'actions mais de beaux décors naturels et du grand spectacle visuel avec des milliers de figurants costumés.L'image et la définition est très bonne.
