Not as bad as feared
I must confess that the first review I read of the recently released blu ray had me spooked. My pre-order had arrived and was as yet unviewed. Haven't watched the whole movie yet but here are my first impressions of the transfer. The picture quality wasn't the disaster I expected. True there is a degree of grain which is only to be expected on a movie more than 50 yrs old, and to be fair there are much better preserved examples of similar or older vintage out there (e.g. Zulu) but the mastering job is actually fairly decent. Those who like to make a correlation between video bit rate and image quality will be pleased to hear the video rate is continually nudging the 40 Mb/sec mark. (Something this film shares with Zulu and other top transfers). The grain is quickly forgotten after a few minutes.Comparing it with the R2 dvd reveals that they've either found a better original or managed to clean it up quite a bit.The R2 dvd shows a lot of flaws on the master (i.e. white/black "sparklies") which are almost entirely absent on the blu ray.Resolution is much improved on the blu ray and makes the purchase well worthwhile. If you have a huge screen and have a tendency to sit too close then the grain might be a deal-breaker for you but for anyone else I say enjoy this version because it's as good as you'll get (for the moment....)

Barbarella (DVD) (1968) Jane Fonda
This is one of Jane Fonda's early films, based on a comic book and best seller, by Jean Claude Forest. In this Dino De Laurentis production Jane Fonda is Barbarella in the year 40.000, a girl that things just happen to in her role as a Peace keeping agent, spreading love throughout the Universe. The colours are beautifully enhanced giving lush comic book appeal, as she tries sex the 'old fahioned' way with a child catcher in a sailboat which travells on ice, and gives a blind Angel, Pygar, the will to fly again in a similar fashion in a large nest. Back on earth love is made by taking a pill and by telepathy whilst touching hands, David Hemmings as a bumbling underground leader Dildano has been waiting to try this 'civilised' method for years, with hillarious results.Anita Pallenberg is the husky voiced evil Queen who rules by controlling the 'Matmos' a sea of evil larva which constantly flows under the city of corruption. Scantily dressed like her 'pretty pretty' Barbarella, she vies for the love of Pygar.Milo Oshea plays Duran Duran, a mad renegade scientist, the object of Barberella's visit, to return him to Earth. Before destroying himself and the planet with his laser type armoury, he tortures Barbarella in a machine of sensual eccess, which she finds "kind of nice!"Now known as a serious activist, and with some serious, as well as tongue in cheek films to her name, Jane Fonda plays this with glorious convincing innocence, and that captivating voice which makes this an unmissable classic.

Fun
Uncritical fun. Just enjoy. No point in commenting on the acting or filming because it’s all just paper thin. I actually think it’s slightly better than it seems. Jane Fonda is perfect for the part but nearly all the other characters seem miscast.

HOT & KITSCH & KINKY & LOADSOFUN
It's several decades since I've seen this. And oh WOW ! OH WOW ! It opens with Jane getting her kit off in zeroG, and gets better. I didn't actually remember the suspension-bondage in the city of Sogo, but perhaps it seeped into my unconscious :-). Anita Pallenberg is wonderful as the Black Queen - though her voice is either Fenella Fielding's or Joan Greenwood's (Wikipedia entry on latter lists *Barbarella* in her credits).I fear that the contemporary reference to effete and incompetent 'revolutionaries' in David Hemming's 'Dildano' will be lost on anyone under 30. And, on the subject of revolutionaries ... it's to be remembered that Jane Fonda was once photographed in an anti-aircraft gun emplacement of the heroic North Vietnamese army. Now you'd not expect to see Angelina Jolie amongst the Taliban holding a SAM launcher ... mind you, being a girl they'd likely not want her ;-)If u stuck for prezies (the first sounds of the tread of the Papist Abomination being now heard) go for this !!

Classic Sci FI
A young Jane Fonda opens this clasic film doing what appears to be the only zero g strip tease in film history. Guessing the special effects technigues used are enough to satisfy some film buffs. And while it did become Fonda's favourite films there is enough here to entertain but it is not a film for children.
