Virtuous Minds: Intellectual Character Development

This can be a life changing book
Intellectual character development is sorely lacking in modern society. The influx of information that is available and that we receive purposefully or suggestively in each day demands that we become able to sort through that information to find the truth.

The neighbors' boy
When the author, Philip Dow, was a little boy, he lived across the street from us. He played with our boys. I can happly attest to the wonderful Christian character of this boy--now a man with a PHD--and his family. It doesn't surprise me that he wrote this book. This book is not deep or scholarly. It is a clearly written and organized wake up call. It reminds us that we are not just moral creatures, but intellectual as well. If our thinking gets sloppy, our morals will slide down the same muddied path. What can we do? This book gives us steps we can take--steps we can teach--to climb out of the mess of lazy, careless, and misguided thinking. As a bonus, for educators, Dow presents the bones of a workable academic approach.

five stars... two thumbs up.
Excellent book. For anyone who serves in a leadership role including parents, elders, coaches, etc. In our society we see many people who have missed important stages and seeds of character development. Unfortunately, I happened to be one of them. Vice and virtue get blurred in some cultures. If you seek to do redemptive work for humanity this is a great buy. Few books have permanent life in my library and this is one of them.

Great book for all
Well written, speaks to our culture and challenges us to think. In a culture of fast food thinking this book is refreshing. Great book for all. Who are we?. Much of who we are is a product of a series of choices.

A nice modern treatment, of some good old truths
The writer is focused, clear, and clever. He uses many excellent metaphors and analogies. If you are into building up Virtues and appreciating the value of the intellect this is a great book for you!

I took away some good thoughts on worshipping with my mind
Short. But helpful. Godly carefulness is an overlooked but essential mark of a disciple. I took away some good thoughts on worshipping with my mind, my effort and my attention to detail.

Decent Academic Read
Interesting read for a beginners world values class.

Overly simplistic, sexist and racist undertones
This is honestly one of the most terrible books I have ever read. The virtues he is exploring are good in theory, but he explains them in a condescending self righteous way, using examples that are overly simplistic. Many of the examples have portray the example of intellectually weak as minorities or women, and it is plainly insulting. Other examples show blatant misunderstanding of the content, like the intellectual weakness of missing a single syntax error in miles of code. This is the type of book that Christians read to reinforce their self righteousness, so if that's what you're into then you'll love this!
