It's like being there in Versailles {which I think may have been the idea} so the viewer can party along with them all. The cast are all great in the deeper situations, as well as in the fun times.

The sets and costumes are wonderful, costumes are stunning and the acting is good. The whole effect however was completely ruined by the ‘rock music’ soundtrack. I thought at first that there was something wrong with my tv and that I was picking up background noise. Whoever's Idea this was should be swiftly sent to the guillotine and have their head put on a spike as a warning to all!!

I'm not a fan of Kirstan Dunst but she looks amazing in this and conveys so much with just her smile or facial gesture, the opening scene of her eating cake did it for me lol.I thought this would be an up beat period drama but it does not have much in depth detail of her life. It starts showing her life from when she got married. We are introduced to her life in scenes with little dialogue. Then it becomes a bit of a music video and has quite a few montages. Unfortunately I think some of the sadder moments are not done very well.However it is shot beautifully and the cinematography is amazing. The 80's sound track actually works quite well. But overall I enjoyed watching it. But it is not a period drama in the orthdox sense so be careful I do not think everyone will enjoy it.

I was super excited about this story when purchasing it, and was then consequently fully immersed in the action and the emotions described and shown by Marie Antoinette. The descriptions of the boisterous extravagance and the endless refinery truly were a wonder upon the eye, and those with good knowledge of socioeconomic conditions at the time of the late 18th century will be able to imagine the contrast between the heavenly lifestyle of Marie Antoinette compared to the stressful hardship of the average working citizen of le Francais.One huge problem that I and I'm sure a lot of viewers were confused or even frustrated about is clearly the word "imagine". Viewers literally only receive Marie Antoinette's world instead of also including the Les Miserables-esque landscape and terror that gripped France so strikingly when approaching those frightening 18th century 90's. There is hardly any mention of the growing tension amongst the poorer classes over the mass loss of food, the grossly large prices on bread due to the poor harvesting, and not to mention the vast tax increases due to the incessant funding of the wars in America.But, can you really be angry at the moviemakers for their choice of narrative and plot? The movie title literally says "Marie Antoinette" and not "The French Revolution".Individuals that are thinking of buying the movie purely to enjoy a window into the violence and terror of the bloodlusting revolutionaries in Paris should definitely keep their wallets inside of their pockets, because this movie is definitely not for them. In fact, there's literally only about a minute of a scene where the angry mob charges upon the palace in Versailles. The rest of the movie time is dedicated to showing Marie Antoinette's luxury. The plot is as simple as that.We get to see everything important stage of Marie Antoinette's life in the palace of Versailles. We get to scrutinize her behaviour, her interests, her friendships, her passions and her affairs. Throughout the story, there is a definite sense that the producers wanted to envision a teenager having fun with her friends, everyday. There are large scenes of her and her male and female aristocratic friends of similar ages dancing in great banquet halls and parties, frollicking and running through the meadows and fields around Versailles, and watching the "beautiful" sunrise.These activities hold certain similarities with the activity of the common teenager: fun, hanging out with friends, discussing random matters and gossiping. It's clear that the target audience is young people, and hence why they have boldly employed soundtracks of the modern world who seem rather out of place of the traditional grandeur of 18th century France, almost as if these songs had a Tardis of their own to travel to whatever portion of time they please. But it works well to create a rather excitable and upbeat to Marie Antoinette's adventure in becoming the Queen of France, before her tragic demise.Overall, people watching the film can expect a vibrant and scrutinous observance of a teenage Queen living the life of royalty, facing her problems that are flung her way and having as much fun as she can at the same time. The aristocratic world gives viewers an idea of what life is like inside French royalty before the monarchy was destroyed, and how Marie Antoinette spent her time throughout.Enjoy!

i loved this film so much! i think it gives actual insight on the feelings of the royalty in this situatiion. they are of course to blame but-i found the costumes amazing! the mix of historical accuracy and a modern twist in the costumes tied in perfectly with how the whole story was told, giving it a more humanistic and relatable themes to modern viewers.the actors were absolutely amazing. i felt what they felt, intensley. the humanistic feel of these infamous charachters of history is beautiful.overall, it was a wonderfull film, all of the aspects of this combined makes a wonderful and perfect, emotional story that is told through the lens of the girl who didnt want to be there in the first place.i loved it.

Not quite what I was expecting but quite entertaining

This is an insult to the Queen of France and an insult to France. Its the most long winded boring piece of cinematography that I have ever seen. It lacks structure, narrative and authenticity. It is utterly ridiculous. The scenes drag on without rhyme or reason. Its about as much use historically as a chocolate teapot. Do not waste your time!!!!! I have given it 1 star rating in order to have the review published, however, it doesn't deserve a single star let alone a minute of my precious time!! Netflix should remove this pathetic excuse for a film!!

This film has stood the test of time and continues to capture me even after all these years. It's not a dialogue-heavy film which may put some people off, but I think it works so well, and the aesthetic and modern vibe work seamlessly with the period in which it is set. I'm not a film buff by any means, but even I can appreciate how great this film is.

auch wenn sofia coppolas ( das geheimnis ihres todes , lost in translation ) film keinen zweifel daran läßt, dass der hübsche leichtkopf titelgebender königin ( kirsten dunst ) zunächst eher aufgrund unmäßigen champagnergenusses bleiern hängt und nicht, weil die zu herzen genommene schwere der absolutistischen souverenität ihn belastet. viel eher noch erdrückt da die - für eine etwas vernachlässigte unter vielen österreichischen prinzessinnen gänzlich unerwartete - last der familiären verantwortung als bürde der überlebensgroßen mutter kaiserin (mit mehr als einem mütterlichen augenzwinkern besetzt:  marianne faithful ).der film sucht also stets sympathisierende nähe zur bisweilen arg von der historie verfehmten person ihrer mäjestät. so er denn überhaupt die historische person ihrer majestät sucht. trotzdem der film auf antonia frasers eher geschwätziger biographie  "the journey"  basiert, scheint die amtlich-politische person der regisseurin nämlich größtenteils schnuppe, vielleicht weil ihr die politik begrifflich zu nahe bei der political correctness liegt. und absolut unkorrekt im sinne der vergilbten normen für einen kostümierten erzählfilm ist dieses stück hier allemal, nur darf der zuschauer sich wundern, wie zart und barbie-pink maskiert der punk daher kommt. denn coppola widmet sich viel lieber dem sujet, das ihr am nächsten liegt, und in welchem sie uneingeholte expertin ist: absolut stilsichere, traumwandlerisch feinfühlige studien weltenverlorener charaktäre aus (ab)gehobenen gesellschaftsschichten.wenn da nun der professionell kritisierende vorwurf laut wird, dass die regisseurin "beim impressionistischen ansatz aus ihren beiden vorherigen filmen bleibt, der in den überwältigenden kulissen allerdings weniger verträumt als kraftlos wirkt", hört sich das, geht es nach mir, viel mehr an, als sei es ihr eben doch auf geradezu kongeniale weise geglückt, das bild, das man heute von der kronprinzessin' charakter in ihrem reduntanten, absolutistischen zeremoniellen unterworfenen leben hat, einzufangen. und dies in form eines filmpoems mit schwelgerisch pastellener ausstattung, einer sowohl als pomp wie auch auf understatement setzenden bildauswahl und haargenauer musikselektion, die von den emotionalen "reisestopps" der behandelt werdenden personen erzählt, wo es die offen-sichtlichen hofeindrücke verschweigen.angemerkt sei an dieser stelle vielleicht noch, dass der vergleich zu den heutigen societygören nur insofern trifft, als man damit nicht geschmacksbeleidigend grelle blödblinsen und moralbefreite luxusproletten wie oft beschworene paris hilton meint, sondern den bogen vielleicht zu bohemeren it-girls wie coppola und dunst selbst spannt. denn es besteht meines erachtens nach ein immerhin bemerkenswerter unterschied zwischen leicht- und hohlköpfig. dementsprechend auch der das publikum anerkennend fordernde (im gegenteil zu: langweilende) ansatz, nicht effektheischerisch darzustellen, was eh jeder weiss, nämlich wie die königin denn nun in radikaler problembehandlung schlußendlich von ihrer kopflast befreit wird, sondern allgemeines wissen zum näheren verständnis des filmes voraussetzen.jedenfalls würde ich es den paris hiltons dieser welt nicht zutrauen, diese umwerfende und umwerfend charmante schwermut, chucks, platons höhlengleichnis (ja, tatsächlich, wer hätte das gedacht, erkenntnistheorie in einem film, der vornehmlich für seine - übrigens eher ungelungenen - manolo blahnik schuhe bekannt ist), britischen new-wave-post-punk und das ancien régime derart passgenau, radikal und doch sanft-humorig unter einen hut der zurecht oscar-prämierten kostümbildnerin milena canonero ( barry lyndon , der pate) zu bringen.allein für diese leistung 5 zacken aus der krone mit jeweils einem draufgespießten petit four.PS: sollte aber nun der geneigte zuschauer doch die historisch verbürgtere person der regina non grata suchen, so versuche er es einfach mit dem sonst eher mediochren  "das halsband der königin" , der streift besagte dame zwar kurz, aber treffend und ebenso gut gekleidet. wem das immernoch zu wenig dramatisch und unrevolutionär ist, der probiert vielleicht das gleichnamige alte  MGM vehikel  nach stefan zweigs  "bildnis eines mittleren charakters" , der, von der kritik liebevoller behandelt, zwar mit dem buch und der politik genauso wenig zu tun hat, aber genauso überwältigende kulissen und kostüme in zeitgemäß hyperdramatischem zuschnitt bietet. ein neuzugang in den filmischen auseinandersetzungen mit der "autrichienne" bietet benoit jaquots  "leb wohl, meine königin!"  mit einer am rande des nervenzusammenbruchs entlanglächelnden diane krüger in nämlicher rolle. jedoch muss der zuschauer, obwohl der film aus der perspektive einer bediensteten geschildert wird, auch hier einen ähnlich beschränkten winkel mit fehlendem blick durch das gitter des güldenen käfigs in kauf nehmen, in puncto kostüm, tempo, detailschärfe und teifgang seine erwartungen aber erheblich drosseln. das geheimnis ihres todeslost in translationkirsten dunstmarianne faithful"the journey"barry lyndon"das halsband der königin"MGM vehikel"bildnis eines mittleren charakters""leb wohl, meine königin!"

I luv this movie. The scenery and costumes are over the top like Marie Antoinettes hair. Every thing is so beautiful and picturesque.

Devo dire che la storia della regina di Francia per eccellenza mi ha sempre appassionato e questo film me la fa apprezzare ancora di più. A partire dagli splendidi costumi, per il quale ha vinto l'Oscar, fino alla colonna sonora e alle locations. Unica pecca, ecco perchè non ho dato il punteggio massimo, è che il film, secondo me, è incompleto, dato che si conclude con la fuga della famiglia reale a Varennes.
