Got one for over 30 years!
Superb quality. We have one for last 30 years that caught hundreds of rats and mice. Really good design with both sides entry. Very robust. Previous one still works. I am So happy that I found same trusted model. We moved to farm so will be buying few more of there. This model is just a workhorse. Can keep it outside no problem. Design stops animal from opening it from the inside.

Excellent once you get the hang of it
Build quality is excellent, it is a Rolls Royce quality of jail cell for squirrels! Don't forget these pests will chew at the cage once caught so a sturdy cage helps! Tips: 1. Like other reviewers have stated, the sensitivity needs adjusting (place it at the tip of the trigger). Use only one door (without the hook latch) to force the squirrel to fully enter before triggering. 2. The trigger plate will need a piece of cardboard or corex sheet cutout for the squirrels to step on. These buggers are crafty and will tiptoe over the mesh meaning it will not trigger otherwise. Manufacturing oversight, it should have been included with a metal plate but a minor point. 3. Get yourself some gloves, there is a metal plate covering for your fingers but the angry bandits will attempt to scratch and chew your fingers off as retribution. Or you can save the gloves and get yourself some plasters instead? :)

Not what I expected, but genuinely great.
4 starts as half of it doesn’t work, but the other side is doing the job of both. This is going to be a slightly odd review, but I’ll go for it. The trap arrived the next day. The box and packaging were in perfect condition. The trap opens on both ends, a hook to pull and a bar that pushes under the door to keep it open. The hook arm was not connected to the pressure plate and I spent a good 45 minutes to an hour trying to work out how to fix it/put it back. I’m quite technically minded, but eventually gave up as felt super pissed off that 1) I couldn’t fix it and 2) I was going to have to wait to get another trap sent out. As the squirrel (my partner named her Susie. Susie is by now the bane of my existence as she is destroying my bulbs, digging holes in the garden, digging up my flowers and opening up my “squirrel proof bird feeders” and gorging herself) is really starting to get to me I decided that I didn’t want to wait and 1 door out of 2 may be fine. I set the trap and pit walnuts as bait at the far end of the cage. I crushed a couple to increase the scent. 20 to 30 minutes of pottering around in the green house and I decided that it was time to head inside. I looked over at the trap and low and behold what do I see - Susie. I did the same thing again, and half an hour later I got Susie’s friend Derik. So, a strong part of me wants to give this trap 5 stars as it works amazingly well. I have given this item 4 stars purely as it came faulty. Even if this is a common fault (and that’s a big IF as I don’t know this) I don’t really think it matters. I would happily buy this again.

best rat trap we've ever owned
This is a great rat trap. We thought it would only be good for catching large rats but it catches any size rat. We recently realised a lot of rats had moved in with our chickens. We've managed to change how we feed our chickens so the rats can no longer get their food. We noticed they liked our parrot seeds (such as sunflower seeds) that we put out for the wild birds/partridges. So we placed this trap and another directly over the site where we were seeing the rats. We've only had this trap for 1 week and we've already caught 8 rats in it and only 2 in the other (different) trap. It's a great bit of kit. We find we have to sit and watch it though because if a big one gets in you have to move quickly to pick it up as they are strong and can push out the door. But these are the really big rats and you will only have 2-4 of them. The babies and females can push the door but not open it enough. I suggest putting the rat trap straight in a box and then driving them a good couple of miles away, near a new food source is a good place to take them! We put bread covered in peanut butter and seeds on the hook and place chopsticks on the 'stand' part of the trap. We find that when the rats are trying to avoid the sticks they push past them which causes the central mechanism to move and thus shut the trap, as not all of them are interested in the bread. We also sprinkle a few seeds at the back of the trap and 5 or 10 outside just to get them used to the trap and to encourage them further in. We have also found that when the door starts quickly closing the rat doesn't get trapped as they've normally turned round by that point to try and escape. (even the big ones). So basically make your trap their only source of food and get them confident with it. They will soon 'flock' in. also watch out for them 'spraying' on you. handle with gloves so you don't leave your scent and invest in a plastic box slightly bigger than the trap for car journeys

RUBBISH
I bought this rat cage to catch the rats in my garden as the reviews were very good for this item. The frist night I caught a hedgehog the next night the rat got in eat the snack then got out??????????????????????? I tried again but nothing then lastnight I put the cage out in the same place all set up with a line attached to let me know that the trap has gone off. In was woken through the night (3am) as the cage door shut the line pulled a tin off the table in my flat so i went to check. I found the cage was bent and there was no snack and no rat. This cage is not strong enough to hold a rat and the flap at the front of the cage that lets the rat enter can be lifted up by a rat or if that fails ratty can just bend the cheap wire cage to let himself out. I am now going back to using poison placed in 1.5 meter long sections of drain pipe with a hole in the center of the pipe to put the poison in. I have a dog so I cover the pipe so that the only way in is through either end too small for a dog or cat, with the hole for putting the poison in also coverd. This is a safe and cheap way of controlling rats. And to all those people that say its wrong to kill rats in this way they should look up the diseases they can spread and have done.
