Strong magnet
The media could not be loaded. There are typically four kinds of permanent magnets, which have corresponding ranges in strength and cost. The weakest are common ferrite and ceramic magnets. The next step up is alnico (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt). Then there are the rare-earth magnets, Samarium Cobalt & Neodymium Iron Boron. The advertising doesn't say, but my guess is that the type of magnet used in this device is the strongest: NdFeB.I found a website that sells this type, in approximately the size used in this EWK Magnet, for a little over four dollars each. A bulk purchase might reduce the cost, which puts this strongest type of magnet in line for use in this tool. The back of the card included in the packaging says "20 lbs lifting capacity". B!S!The Amazon advertising touts "a powerful 20 lbs pull force" and shows the tool appearing to hold a 20lb round workout-style weight. The concept of 'pull force' is a bit complicated, but it is not the same as lifting capacity. That picture does not show that the bottom of the weight is *probably* resting on a surface. The magnet cannot directly lift even eight pounds. And yet the claim of 20lb "pull force" is probably accurate. My video includes a section that shows that two gallon jugs full of water weigh a little over 17 pounds. The scale is meant for human bodies and can't weigh something as light as a single jug, but I'd guess the weight of one jug of water is close to eight pounds. In the video, one jug is hung from the base of an iron vise (which I'm renovating). The total weight should be around 10 pounds. Clearly, the magnet cannot lift it. However, in the next sequence, two jugs and the base (together, about 20lbs) can easily be dragged by the magnet. Pull force is different from lifting capacity. There is no question that this device is occasionally the very best thing - absolutely needed - in some circumstances. I've always had an extendable magnet around, and this one is an excellent choice. The grip is comfortable and non-slip, the extension range is impressive, and the strength of the magnet is about as strong as any in such a device. I recommend knowing the truth behind the advertising. I also recommend this device based on the reasonably low price.

Very convenient to have
I got these for my husband because he's always dropping tools in the engine and they've been great they hold pretty well that's a pretty strong magnetic grip you just have to be careful when you're pulling it back up you don't knock it off because they are kind of small but that's good for small spaces

Not A Good Value For Me
So the unit I received wouldn’t come anywhere close to picking up a steel 10-pound barbell weight (half of the claimed “pull force”). Based on actual performance, I believe this item is NOT a good value, and I would NOT recommend it to fellow shoppers. My photos show U.S. Dollar Bill and U.S. Quarter Dollar for sizing comparisons.I hope you found my comments and photos helpful in your considerations.

A handy addition to any toolbox
This magnetic pick-up tool is very handy. I'm always dropping a nut or bolt down into some dark area of the engine compartment. This tool makes retrieving that fastener an easy task. The telescopic handle provides plenty of reach to get to most areas within a typical engine compartment. The magnet is strong enough that in most cases, as long as you are close to a loose fastener, it will be drawn to the magnet and attach to it. I will be buying a second one of these for my mobile toolbox. Recommend.

Great price
7-1/2" collapsed .30=1/2" fully extended .Very sturdy .I picked up a 5 pound chunk of steel no problem . That was inch thick material , about 3" X 6" , so the magnetic attraction was quite high .I couldn't lift a 10 pound Olympic plate attaching the magnet to the edge , so it didn't have full contact , but I think the 20 pound advertised capacity is a bit unbelievable .Plenty powerful neodymium magnet though ; should be adequate for the majority of situations .

Very strong and handy little shop magnet
This magnet is excellent for picking up small metallic objects that fall or roll out of reach, like if your car keys get dropped right inside your car's engine block while you're working on it, or if your eyeglasses wind up under the desk somewhere hard to reach. It's just worth having around; I have no complaints about it, and it can be a real lifesaver. Very strong magnet.
