Edge Chronicles: Beyond the Deepwoods (The Edge Chronicles Book 1)

I looked for this for forever
I remember reading this book in junior high, and it stuck with me, even ten years later. The story is incredibly rich and world is interesting and very well done. The characters are very round, even the gloamglozer himself! I do wish that it hadn't jumped from setting to setting so quickly, but the superb storytelling made up for it by far! I had been wanting to reread this series, but all I could remember was "deepwood". And then I finally found it! Thanks for enriching my childhood and inspiring me as an adult!

My favorite fantasy book of all time.
This book series is in my opinion one of the greatest fantasy series of all time. The richly detailed and mysterious world is rife with perils that boggle the mind. The characters will time and time again narrowly escape death in a hundred different forms, their bad-assery shining forth as they conquer the creatures that haunt the land. When they aren't dealing with the Warhammer 40k levels of dangerous fauna and flora, they are navigating the rich and complicated social fabric of the many factions of the edge. This series really does have it all, and it's what made me love fantasy. This series defined my taste in fiction.

An adventurous read
After the ninth or tenth time Twig was almost killed I thought that was all this book was going to be about - Twig's next struggle to NOT die - and for the most part that's really what it was, the poor boy had been almost eaten, bludgeoned, drowned, digested and a number of other things more then I can count, and by the time I finished chapter 11 I had to wonder what was the point of all this? Was this book just a series of events or was there a reason for all of it?There was, believe me and because there is an underlying plot and not just a series of adventures strung together I love this book. From the very beginning Paul Stewart's writing is both colourful and dark. His descriptions are peppered with onomatopoeia and the world he has created in the Deepwoods are reminiscent of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Rowling's Harry Potter. The different creatures and plant life are all so uniquely fascinating and the adventures Twig goes on may seem individually pointless but you can see through them that our hero is growing. He grows from this gangly young boy who never felt like he belonged to a boy that knows that he is far more than nothing. It was unexpected how quickly things wrapped up but it did not disappoint. I couldn't help but cheer for Twig as he battled through his adventures and after all he had been through I was happy with the conclusion. Some parts were surprisingly disturbing for a children's book, I recommend you read it before giving it to a kid to read.

Our Favorite Series of All Time!!!
My son and I read a lot together. This series is our absolute favorite, with its vivid imagery, its complex world with so many hidden and apparent dangers and its marvelous and well-defined, multiple generations of characters. Get ready to go on a quest for the series - its not found everywhere. We got the first two and the seventh from our library, bought a few, borrowed a few. We recommend reading them in the order in which they were written, not reorganized to put all the Twig, Quint and Rook books together. Enjoy!

Perfect
Perfect fantasy adventure for kids 7-12. I loved this book when I was a kid as well. Even as I get older and am reading it to my child, I still appreciate the creativity of The Edge and its creatures

Lovely books
So fun, and sad and delightful! My son convinced me to read these books, and I am so glad. What a beautiful story. I thought it was an innocent children's story until I cried and contemplated life and loneliness and the tragedy of human existence.

I'm looking to see if this book won some awards. It should. It just keeps pulling your heart along page by page.

FAR beyond earlier books.
The first books in the edge chronicles were all 5 star, but now the fourth book in the series really takes the biscuit. I stumbled across 4, 5, and 6 in my class at school, and they really intrigued me. I downloaded The Curse Of The Gloamglozer on my Kindle to see what the series was like, and believe me, I was not disappointed. But now I've read Beyond The Deepwoods I've nearly forgot about Quint. Twig has had so many adventures and met so many new creatures I've downloaded Stormchaser immediately. In Beyond The Deepwoods Twig, adopted by a family of woodtrolls in the Deepwoods, strays from the path into a great adventure teeming with strange and deadly creatures and weird and bloodthirsty plants...

Super!

The best book ever!
We gave it 5/5 because it is an interesting and adventurous story. We liked how imaginative the story was and all the character's. Our favourite character's were Twig and the Banderbear. We were a bit confused at the beginning and it took us a few chapters to get in to the story but we would highly recommended the book.
