The New Real Book Volume 1 (Eb Version)

Poor value for money
OK, it's nicely typeset and the transcriptions are more accurate than the Real Book. The claim that the chords are more accurate may or may not be true. It seemed to me that every chord printed was a more complex version of the one in the Real Book. Whether that is a good or bad thing is debatable. It certainly makes the book less approachable and anyway the whole point of jazz harmony is that you can extend and alter chords as you wish. Personally I would rather be told that the chords are m7, 7, maj7 - ie common chords I'm going to know and be able to play right away - than be told they are m9b5, 9#11, maj13 and be constantly trying to work out what that means. The argument that they are transcriptions from the performances of great jazz artists is fine, and it's nice to have an accurate transcription available, but it's still only one musician's interpretation of the piece. The content doesn't match the Real Book. That means, practically speaking, you can't use it to play with other musicians because the chances are they won't have the Sher book. There's a reason we all use the Real Book - it's a lingua franca. To be honest, I only bought it because my sax teacher insisted on the Sher book rather than the Real Book, but it is less useful than the Real Book and it isn't worth twice the price.

This is a great great book
This is a great great book. Lots of classics with ranging difficulty. Good for players of (almost) all ages and skill levels, with room for growth for those who are beginners!
