6 every enjoyable DVDs of journeys around Europe
I love these videos. They are somewhat formulaic - Michael Portillo goes somewhere on a train whilst wearing a bright coloured jacket- is met by someone who shows and explains something about the destination, takes another train, and somehow stubbles on someone as if by accident who explains something else. But somehow they are all hugely enjoyable - partly its the filming, partly it is Señor Portillo himself who is certainly a very engaging presenter, and partly it is the fascinating places that he visits, but each episode - and there are 6 DVDs of them here - is a little treat

Excellent series
IMHO still the best rail travel series, despite the many imitations. All in a single space saving case.

Great way to see the Continent at the moment
If we can't go there due to lockdown and pandemic then this is a great way to see it. A great series either way.

I have to be honest, I've watched Michael Portillo on my local PBS station and didn't much care for his style on this series. I then watched him on an American version and changed my opinion of him 100%. Just started this series again (now that I have the DVDs) and I really like him. He's funny. Self-deprecating. Lot's of information. Well worth watching. Don't forget, if you're in the US you have to have a all-region DVD player. You also have to be patient waiting for the DVDs to arrive. I ordered on June 30 and received them on August 1. Of course, part of this could be the delays Trump has put into the USPS! If you're interested in history, especially just before WWI, Portillo's your man. He knows Europe, he knows the history and the current state. Easy to listen to. Lovely scenery. Well worth the cost.
