I really am a college graduate, but cannot figure out how to open and use the belt ?????

To open the belt you lift the top of the buckle on the side where the belt is fixed to the buckle. That would be on the left if you insert the belt from the right side. Some buckles are very tight and hard to open, so you'll have to pull pretty hard.

Does the buckle contain nickel?

Regardless of the material, the buckle is way too large, and it is uncomfortable when you sit down and it digs into your stomach. I’m not even that big: 180 lbs and 6.0 ft tall. Very average. Look for a belt with a smaller, less obtrusive buckle that actually holds the belt tight. This one doesn’t lock in place.
