Does anyone with lots of experience of regular composting find that this bin is cold in winter, esp if not placed in direct sun?** A: I have had one of these bins for 5 years now. In the winter it goes cold. The first winter I tried with hot water bottles etc. to no avail. Now I just leave it. I still feed it with peelings from my kitchen bin. This time around I was still putting in apple cores and peel as well as my kitchen bin into November. The bin was cold and full and I couldn't be bothered with emptying it cos it was cold outside. My bin is now half full. The bin is alive with worms and I know when it is time to empty it the compost will be good. **Q: Is this bin suitable for a small garden, it would have to be placed near the back door? Thank you** A: It's amazing really how quickly this bin can produce compost for you. With a small garden it may take longer to fill but that may mean you don't have to empty it so often. It looks smart and is a bit smaller and neater looking than your average wheelie bin. I've had mine for about 6 years now. During the winter it may go cold but don't let that bother you cos the compost that comes out will still be uniform **Q: Does it stay hot? Or is it really hard work?** A: Sorry, I forgot to say that my bin, which sits in the sun all year round, gets up to 120F in the summer - you get a faceful of steam when you open the lid! **Q: I'm wondering why the Hotbin is £50 more than buying it directly from the manufacturer who charge £195 including all the accessories?** A: They are £300 new now. A bit concerning for a company that proudly states that they are Uk made.. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Slow starter but now in full swing! *by J***W on 4 February 2013* I got this just after Christmas and it was snowing the day after I had set it up so I didn't see much happen for two weeks. But now (under a month later) I get a composty steam facial when I open the lid to 'feed' it. I use around 50% cardboard and shredded paper and 45% food waste and 5% composted bark (which came with the order). I add a 2lt bucket of food waste 2 times a week (more if I can). I am looking forward to the spring, summer and autumn when I can add my garden waste to it.Its a great size (wheelie bin size) so it doesn't take up much space and it not too tall (I am 5'1"). The raking stick is very useful as it easily combines the new material with the stuff below (I do get concerned with damaging the inside walls, so I am careful). The extra thermometer is also an asset as the lid thermometer (so far) is always half the temperature (30 degrees Centigrade) of the material inside the bin (60 degrees Centigrade).It is very light once all the extra items are removed (e.g. the composted bark bag) so I could move it easily.The delivery time said it wouldn't arrive for 3 weeks but it was only 1 week.My only advise with this is to be patient and be consistent in 'feeding' it twice a week. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Disappointed. *by A***R on 25 January 2020* We were very pleased with this product for several months until the rats decided to start eating through the outside. Dont waste your money people! *by D***Y on 4 April 2014* Bought this bin with added extras, took 2+ weeks to deliver, it felt like they had to have it delivered from China! lolDescription claims the bin goes to 40-60 degrees C, this is not what happened for me, i followed the instructions very accurately and mine only goes to 10 degrees C!I filled mine with easy composting material such as fine shredded paper, small cut up corregated cardboard pieces, cut grass from my lawn and composted wood chip all mixed together, this was filled up to 40cm then the plastic bottle was filled with hot water and put in, then the rest of the bin was filled up the top with the same easy composting material.This bin is a failure and i have emailed them to ask for advice and they are ignoring me.Don't bother with this overpriced junk.
