Love this book.

Ordered out of curiosity, based on reviews, to see if I would learn anything new about men, gentlemen. These mythical noble, galant, praiseworthy, trustworthy, morally sound men.Sadly, have to say … no.To start let me preface this review by stating that I am an ordinary woman, one who loves men, one who definitely does not define herself as a feminist, especially by today’s standards.Regarding commentary on women … “lie to them” … was a standard mantra throughout the book. “Lie!”If anything surprised me, it wasn’t how selfish men are, but how much time men spend planning and plotting their tactics in the pursuit and poor treatment of women the sole purpose being to have baseless meaningless sex with women, as many as possible.If there is one thing women should know about men from the very beginning it is how much time and thought men spend in plotting their sexual advances on women.Based on this book if a relationship between a man and a woman were to evolve; the foundation of it is based on a lie, a lie ‘he’ told. Small wonder relationships don’t last. But this book is definitely NOT about relationships it’s the direct opposite! It’s about how to use women.The ‘10’ lists … most of them were so far off base, especially with regard to female choices or likes. The music collections listed under specific genres were spotty and incomplete at best.Returned the book for refund. Nothing new or enlightening here. Just perpetuation of the old boy’s club same old same old. Lackluster, boring and degrading to women.The general basics provided herein mamma easily could have taught for she knows it all.Makes one wonder if men really are this naive or basic, must be if books like this are selling. The book more aptly should be titled “Debrett’s Guide for the Modern Alpha Male” as it is a more truthful and descriptive title.Ladies, if this book is an accurate depiction of the modern male of the species, truly there are no princes out there only a façade of preening pretentious peacock liers and schemers.What was (is) sad is that some male reviewers commented that they gifted the book to their sons. Sigh …

I think this was my 19 year old son's favourite present this Christmas. He loved it, couldn't stop reading it. It was a fun thing to reference too. and very very practical and told me stuff I didn't know and I thought I knew everything.

Great book, very informative and extremely funny in parts. Bought it for my son living in the USA and it was delivered within an acceptable time frame well ahead of the forecast date. As usual, Amazon performed to the expected standard.

I don't like criticising Debrett's or anything etiquette-related in this vulgarian society, but this book falls below the expected and far below the outstanding in every direction it endeavours in: wit, clothing, travelling, music, what to eat, what to read, what to watch. It tries to cover up it's lack of wit and practically not a single essay or opinion with mountains of dry lists of things that one already knows, never really cared for, or needn't consult a list in an etiquette book for (how to ski list, hotel tips list, proposing rules list, and how to choose underwear)The main mistake here is not even the topics, anyone good can make a list of what to bring to Mt. Everest or how to choose a diamond ring dashed interesting and gentlemanly, it's that they don't dare tell you anything, only quote well known and cut-down facts into 5-word sentences that falls so short of being a flowing read, never even mind the witlessness. Facts are meant to be tactfully and artistically presented, not shoved down one's throat.

Fun read and good advice

イギリス文化、紳士のスタイルにとても関心があり、1920～30年代を舞台にした作品をよく見ています。今回更なる勉強が出来ればとイギリスの定番書を購入しました。当然英語はイギリス式で書かれておりますので、アメリカ英語を見たくないという方にもオススメ。笑イラストや写真付きなので、そこまで読解力も必要ないです。内容はスーツファッション、マナーなどに留まらず、そんな事まで？といった内容まで幅広く紹介されています。インテリア、レコード、ペット、エクササイズ等、様々なジャンル。ただそのぶん、本格的に、例えばハットの細かい種類がどうとか、ダブルブレステッドのどこどこの幅とか、そういった詳細な事に関してはかなり省かれている感じがします。広く浅くイギリスの紳士的知識を身に着けたい人に向いています。個人的にはスーツについて勉強がしたく、そこの記載があっさりしていたのでそこだけマイナスです。結構大きめのいわゆる図鑑のようなサイズなので、電車等で読むものとしては考えない方がいいかと思います。ハードカバーなので、かなり高級感があり、飾ってもいいかと。タイトルに関しては商品の状態に関してです。イギリスカルチャーインポートショップより、「非常に良い」状態の中古品として購入しました。しかし、最初のページには「クリスマスに、両親より」といった、子供に宛てた内容のメッセージがペンで書かれており。ショックでした。海外発送が基本となる書籍やCDでは、向こうの基準になるので日本の会社ほど期待しない方がいいです。

Quite interesting, fairly useful and compendious enough that there will be more useful things in there than you might be expecting. However this is the age of cheap production (all slaves and most servants having been let go) and I notice the word fugu is misspelled eight times. Fugue is of course something quite different. I can't see any reason for this that makes sense as a decision and so conclude that more care should have been taken. This is also true of some of the advice, in my view.

Full of useful tips which you’ve either figured out already, or will never need to know. But I’m a women, so maybe most men don’t know these things and need to. It makes amusing light reading, and was a great stocking filler.

Quite simply the perfect guide for the modern gentleman. The well written book navigates you through the easy to make mistakes ensuring you are at your best for whatever life throws at you.

An excellent guide to good manners and etiquette for the modern gentleman. It is organised into various sections, everything from correct dress to how one's lady friends should be treated, and contains useful facts and illustrations. This would be an ideal present for a son about to leave school or college as any young man reading it will quickly acquire social capital.
