The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek (English and Greek Edition)

Contents impressive looking but binding questionable.
Just got it in the mail(USPS), haven't really begun to use it yet, ship.box was torn at corners, book shrink-rap cut, but book was clean & fairly intact, just hope it holds-up to a not so impressive publisher's(Brill) binding, will need to be careful with it.

My go-to when I am confused by LSJ
I have many lexicons: LSJ, the new Cambridge, L. A. Sophocles, and others, but when I need more input on a word, my first choice is Brill. This dictionary has many times clarified or even saved a translation. I literally use it several times every day. This is definitely the perfect complement to LSJ.Unfortunately, as other reviewers have stated: the binding is horrible. Since I use the dictionary frequently, one of the boards has become dislodged and I had to duck-tape it back together; the other board will soon be the same, and I am certain that in time the entire book will be a mess. Brill also sells a properly bound version (at least I hope so) in two volumes for $450.00 (this is actually true; I am not exaggerating one penny). I wrote Brill, assuming that this was an expanded edition, but they assured me that the content is identical to the lower-price version. So, I have to ask the question: why does it cost an additional $325 to properly bind this book? Brill should be ashamed for taking advantage of people; the price of the standard edition ($125) is high enough that it should include a proper binding. It is because of the binding that I did not give the dictionary five stars; it is a real shame because the dictionary itself is very useful and quite superb.

Excellent tool
This is a remarkable lexicon. Print quite clear and the entries nuanced.

Love this lexicon!
I have the Great Scott, BDAG, and various others (electronic and paper). At present I'm interested in the Septuagint, so LS has been my mainstay. But this is MUCH easier to use. It doesn't have as many examples as LS, but they're all translated -- really helpful since my Attic and Homeric Greek are terrible. Plus, they take advantage of modern typographical tools like -- BOLD! And graphic elements! Which makes navigating long articles MUCH easier.Furthermore, after reading the many reviews about how bad the single volume binding is, I gritted my teeth and got the 'deluxe' two volume edition. I'm very glad I did. It is really solid. Plus, in two volumes, it is pleasant to curl up with a volume in my lap in my lounger and just browse -- certainly can't do that with electronic lexicons or with the paper Great Scott! I use 'BrillDAG' every day, and it is a pleasure every time.

Thin and transparent paper. Outrageous price for online version.
Pros (in comparison with LSJ):- The layout is good (as advertised by the publisher).- The definitions use contemporary english. (LSJ's language is old-fashioned).- Examples of use are also translated into English. (LSJ does not translate examples and assumes the reader will be able to understand them).Cons:- The paper is thin, transparent and some pages are really hard to read. Eventually the printing will be better in some pages - which compensates for the transparency of the paper - but this is not usually the case. (LSJ is printed in plain white paper which is preferable).- The dictionary's physical copy price can be considered fair. The price of the online version is not. As a matter of fact, it is outrageously expensive - as most things published by Brill*. Seeing that the dictionary it is printed in thin paper which renders it really hard to read, one could expect to be granted access to a digital version for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, this is not the case.Overall, this dictionary is a nice acquisition, but I am convinced that most scholars and students, myself included, will continue to use mainly LSJ (which can be freely accessed online) and perhaps the new Cambridge ancient Greek dictionary set to be released online this year (on Perseus).*The price is five thousand euros, in case you were wondering; or one thousand euros annually - and this for online access only. No internet, no access.

A new Rival to Liddell & Scott
I had read reviews by users of this newly edited Classical Greek dictionary. In English, at least, there has been no rival to Liddell & Scott's work of the mid l9th century. The reviewers were pleased and I was persuaded by their opinions. It's big but the type is clear, so not a burden to read. I'll find it meets my expectations.

Pure wisdom! Pure joy!
It’s such a delicious pleasure for everyone interested in the ancient Hellenic letters to drown in this wonderful dictionary, constructed by someone who is head and shoulders more erudite in the subject. And lovely de luxe edition adds the aesthetic enjoyment!

権威ある希伊辞書の英語版
Montanerriの希伊辞書(Vocablaria della Lingua Greca)の英語版。LSJなどで不足している情報を得るのには最適な辞書。140,000語の見出しを誇る。6世紀までの古典ギリシア語の範囲をカバーしている。

英訳
物理的に壊れやすい。一部の語でイタリア語の原著からの翻訳ではなく、LSJなど既存の希英辞典の語釈に釣られた誤りがある。よってイタリア語が読める方には原著を勧める。

Monumental reference
This is the English translation of the Vocabolario della lingua greca from F. Montanari. A magnum opus. First, it really is a huge book, with 2431 pages and a good size of 7 x 20,3 x 26,7 cm. And secondly, the scope of the dictionary is impressive : from the archaic period up to the VIth century CE, with 132 884 lemmas. Each entry contains the full form of a lemma, its etymology and dialectal variations, and then meanings clearly ordered, with quotations from the literature, inscriptions and so on for almost each entry. I couldn't wait more from a dictionary of that kind : precise meanings, diachronically disposed. Brill is notorious for its quality, and even excellence, in publishing : with this book, I can say it is deserved. Vocabolario della lingua greca
