Enjoyable read
Biltgen does a good job mobilizing technical nuances of AI/ML in a consumable way, which is nice because it is not uncommon for well intentioned books in AI/emerging tech to read very academic. The GAI forward was a nice touch!

The most accessible and entertaining AI book available for Defense and Intelligence professionals...
Dr. Pat Biltgen takes his characteristic wit & wisdom and delivers for the reader an impressively comprehensive overview of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their useful application to projects across the military and intelligence professions. There is enough deep content and reference material (667 references!) for those who have studied AI before to enjoy here AND enough straightforward explanation and introductory material for anyone who wants to learn about AI for the first time.As someone who knew a decent amount about AI back in 2018, I found the book's treatment on the recent use of Transformers, LLMs, ABMs, and GPTs to be the perfect update for understanding today's capabilities. Combine that with anecdotes from real-life DoD programs along with the challenges encountered when implementing AI against hard problems and you get a treasure trove of reality about what could be the greatest shift in workplace value in our generation. All DoD and IC leaders should read this book to get familiar with AI tools and how they are being used already in those communities. 'AI for Defense and Intelligence" explains how AI tools can increase mission productivity while elevating the true value of human thinking in the workplace. A very enjoyable, high level overview
I purchased this book for some summer reading while vacationing. I really enjoyed how it was written. Gives some good history and context that helps paint the picture for how AI/ML can be applied.

Easy read for a beginner.
A colleague who specializes in this field recommended this book. I found this a pretty easy read for a beginner who has been reading about all the developments in AI and needs a high-level introduction. The author covers all relevant topics like natural language processing and generative AI with many relevant examples of military and intelligence problems. I found the chapter on Generative AI very interesting, especially with all the recent developments in the news. The book is very straightforward and a pretty fast read. The author infuses humor to make key points and uses the footnotes to step “out of character” for an aside. I skipped some of the more technical chapters in the middle but found the sections on implementing AI, business models, and the future of AI to be very interesting.

Enjoyable from start to finish!
AI for defense and intelligence is a special read that comes along once in a lifetime (at least in my lifetime I've never gotten home eager to read what is ostensibly a textbook). The author carefully crafts the structure of the book to cater all incoming knowledge levels while still maintaining a level of detail that even seasoned veterans in the subject can appreciate. From start to finish it's an enjoyable read filled with an often light hearted deliverable of complex topics in an ever growing field, I highly recommend it!
