Very nice set of tools for a great price
After reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit worried but when they came in they were in perfect condition. I never trust edged tools for sharpness so I planned on touching up the edges anyway. Only one of the skew chisels had what I would call a 'Bad' edge. I have done a lot of work in Asia and I realize one product is often sold under several names but I found it odd that these were clearly not 'PSI' but 'Bejamins Best'. No matter, they work fantastic. Just to put them through a quick test I grabbed a hunk of limb from an appricot tree that died in my orchard. I used every chisel to test them and thet were all fantastic. As you can see in my pictures my lathe is a low-end Cummins but I had zero issues. Not a single catch and that is impressive since I did not knock the corners off with the bandsaw as you can see. I may still modify the heel but I would do that even with an expensive set. A few things to note that I read in other reviews: 1) If you use these correctly there is never enough pressure to snap the steel. To be sure that doesn't happen, watch Richard Rafan's video on 'Catches'. 2) Yes the ferrules may be loose (mine were not). If they are, my uncle who was a proffesional wood worker would litterally soak them in water overnight to allow the wood which had over dried to swell up and tighten the ferrules again. I would think a light oil would work better but I didn't question what he did. 3) I love the box it comes in but honestly as soon as my shop is set up they will never see that box again. They will be in a handmade rack behind the lathe. So the bottom line is that I am very happy with the purchase and highly recomend them.

Great Beginner Set
First off, I gave the product 5 stars because I truly feel that way. The value you get for the price makes this set well worth the money! However, as with many things, there are pros and cons... Pro: The set is a great beginner set! It comes with a wide variety to get any wood turner started with his gouge collection. When I used them, they did their job, made a square piece of wood round and got the job done. Con: First off, I hand sharpen my tools and the first thing I noticed was the way the tools were made, they were going to dull quickly, and that's exactly what happened. I have sharpened them back to my liking and have yet to see if they hold. The handles are rather small, so if you are a guy who likes to really grip the tool and move it around, don't expect such ability. Lastly, the bowl gouge has a pretty small edge to it and does not allow for a big bite. Personally, I make a lot of bowls, so I will be expanding my gouge collection to include a higher quality bowl gouge.

solid, worth the purchase
being a new guy on the Lathe, i didn't want to spend $400-500 on Lathe tools and then realize i didn't want to anymore. these are a great starter set, and really, could a good set for life if treated well! sharp right out of the box, but you may have to sharpen them depending on the wood you are turning. i used it on poplar, and had no issues with the sharpness. i gave 4/5 stars because i did see some discoloring/overheating on the tips for the parting tool and both skew chisels, but being new i could have just been using them wrong. i turned 11 Beer Steins, so you can make your assessments. either way, even with that my project came out better than expected! definitely worth the purchase! UPDATE JULY 11, 2019 purchased a good grinding/sharpening kit. tools when sharp are great and can get "streamers" with a finish beyond 220 grit. the negative is the metal is cheap so it overheats quickly and dulls even quicker. just keep your sharpener close by (for touch-up only) and it will still be worth the purchase (i have used these on poplar, cedar, red oak, and water oak)

Better than expected - excellent value
I'm new to wood turning. Having just purchased my first lathe I was looking for a good starter set. After some research, I "settled" on these as offering a good balance of quality (HSS & nice handles), selection and number of tools, and price. Ordering through Amazon was easy, and even with free shipping, they were delivered within a few days. Based on other reviews here, I was expecting the tools to need immediate sharpening and the box to be falling apart. I was pleasantly surprised on both counts. The tools were reasonably sharp and the box was sound. Initially they didn't cut as well as I though they should and I wondered if they needed sharpening, but, then I noticed there was a filmy coating on the tools (probably some kind of protectant) which I removed using "Goo Gone". After which they cut much better. Any new sharp tool can use some sharpening, so I dressed them slightly with a diamond "stone" and they cut great. I do wish the parting tool was an 1/8" diamond profile rather than the straight 3/16", and, I can see where bigger, heavier tools will be nice in the future, but, I've already done several small spindle projects (and a fair number of practice spindle trials of beads and coves) which I'm happy with (I really love how you can shave the wood with the skews and get such a smooth finish). I'm very happy with this set and would highly recommend it as a starter set for any new wood turner.

Nice starter set
These are a great starter set of tools for someone who is starting off working on a wood lathe. I purchased them as a gift, but had the opportunity to use them for a while. For the price, I was more than satisfied -- the set includes covers all the basic needs. The tools are generally well-made. They take a good edge, but (as expected given the price) don't hold it very long. That's a problem if you're a professional woodworker, but is not a big issue for hobbyists. The handles are comfortable and the chisels are pretty well attached. It comes in a box, but don't expect much - it's not very well made. It would have been better if the manufacturer replaced the box with a roll-up pouch that would provide more reliable protection. But, box aside, I'm pleased with these. They won't give a set of high-end turning tools (such as Henry Taylor's) a run for their money, but it's a great value set for a beginner.

Unexpected quality for the price
I found carbide quirky and catchy for what I do, so needed to make the proper, HSS plunge. You have to get comfortable sharpening (definitely don't learn to sharpen on a $90 gouge first). All HSS gouges and chisels need sharpening; expensive ones just less often. I just got done roughing a square piece of wood into a cylinder, lazily dwelling on the outer edges of the gouge instead of doing the "even wear roll". I fully expected the edge to need a touch-up, ran my finger across it, and cut it because I didn't expect it still to be fully sharp. Bled on my wood. Very, very satisfied. Truly high speed steel. Another brand had reports of flaws in the steel and breakage. PSI has good QC for the price and the "Benjamin 's Best" they sell as PSI I will use for life. If I buy a fancy tool or two that cost as much each as this whole set, it won't be soon, and I'll know better my favorite ones to choose and get fancy about. I the meantime I will make money with these. I would not have bought the slow speed grinder to sharpen if I would have just remembered I can sharpen on the back of my lathe or spare, cheapo headstock on the bench set to slow enough speed not to overheat HSS and lose its temper. Good to have the grinder eventually but save for a $150 minimum one, I got an orange #100 one and the wheels are junk and it vibrates a little. Anyway get these PSI "Benjamin's Best" gouge and chisels. This model could disappear like other good deals.

A bit overpriced for a project to improve and personalize the tool set.
This set arrived very quickly, which is nice. But, the review is not all about delivery, it must be about the product. So, this set is made of thick steel, which is nice, but what I thought was tool grease on the steel is not. It appears that when the factory workers were coating the wood handle with polyurethane they did so haphazardly. There are splotches of polyurethane on the blades most of the chisels. So, I'll have to clean that. The edges will need honing, but that is to be expected with any tool. For a total of $85 ($78.85 before tax) I expect better quality. The value of this set is really around $45, maybe even as much as $60 if we're being a little more than fair with the profit margin. The tool set is okay, but the handles should be made of hickory instead of a mediocre grade of pine. Hickory is a much stronger wood, better for tool handles, and it is not much more expensive. But, at least the handles are long enough for the type of work they're meant to do, and they're sealed with polyurethane. Yet, looking at the torn and crushed fibers of the tool slots, even with the brass ferrules, I worry that they are more likely to separate with some typical use in a short time. The steel tool and the ferrules also seem to be sort of "glued" in by that same excessive application of polyurethane. It's nice, and expected for the price, that the set comes with its own wooden case. However, the case is not the high quality. There are gaps at the corners where the lid and the body meet, and the the lack of a handle is a little annoying. There are only two small hinges and latches, all of which are small, brass coated, and seem to be a little on the fragile side of things. Worse, there appears to be some spots of rust on the hinges and latches. The case is a project of its own. I will buy some better quality hinges and latches and a handle. With some sanding I believe I can get the lid to sit flush with no gaps on the body. I think I will even use some small screws to reinforce the top and bottom, which are thin sheets of plywood simply glued onto the sides. Hell, I might even get a pen torch to write on the case before I stain and seal the surfaces. I may even get around to using these lathe chisels to turn some hickory handles to replace the existing handles when they start to break. The handles have "Benjamin's Best" burned onto them, but if this is his best then he needs to cut the price in half.

Pretty decent tools
These are pretty good tools, especially at this price (70% or less than the cost of a single top-quality chisel). You might want to create some new handles for them; they're not terrible but definitely not top quality. However, the steel is quite serviceable - especially if you're looking for a set of tools to do some unusual grinds or to experiment with new grinds. I used the scrapers, for example, to experiment with a negative grind - at this price, even if you ruin them it's not a lot of money lost (and negative scrapers are quite fun to use, BTW). I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 for 2 reasons - one, the steel (even though it is M2 HSS) is chinese and therefore somewhat inferior to most (and very inferior to top quality european or american steel - it's worth spending some time researching this if you're not familiar with different types of steel and qualities of production). You'll notice this primarily in the fact that these tools will not keep an edge nearly as long as top-quality HSS tools (you'll be honing quite a bit). Though it will be less noticeable, especially to a beginner, they also will not achieve the hair-popping razor sharpness of a top-quality tool and will require a bit more work to get the best edge that they are able to achieve. The second reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the handles - they are large enough and fairly well-balanced, but you'll likely be replacing them within a few months (or immediately if you're more experienced and particular). Bottom line - this is a perfect set for a beginner. They will do a great job teaching you to turn - how to use each tool, how to grind and hone, etc, and they will be fantastic for helping you learn what grinds/techniques work for you. Once you've figured all that out, you can go drop 20 times the price of these on top-quality tools - and this set can become the one you experiment with.

Slow delivery, good product, good customer care.
Delivery was slow but product looks to be excellent, I will review further when I've had more time with the tools. Very good customer care when contacted.

best first (or second) set of chisels
Ignore the bad reviews, they are written by uninformed woodworkers. - Coating on tools is gross/whatever - This is a heavy coating applied in factory to protect your steel and is standard in industry. It's easily removed with some solvent, be sure to immediately lightly oil surfaces after removing this to prevent rust. I suggest sewing-machine, air-tool, or mineral oil as available. Use heavier oil for longer storage. - They arrived DULL!!! - This is normal also, as even higher-end brand-name chisels generally come only ground to approximate shape. Sharpening a brand new chisel is a thing. Order yourself a bench grinder and put a high-quality wheel on it just for sharpening. Better and finer wheels remove less chisel which saves you money. Chisels cut miles of wood in moments, get used to sharpening. - Short handles, can't lock against hip/forearm - First of all, you aren't supposed to hold your chisel like that, please take a class before you cause injury from vibration or worse. Secondly, these are suited for smallish to mid-size work on an average bench lathe, not turning large burl bowls or doing hollow work with long reaches required. Thirdly, turn yourself a longer handle instead of blaming the tool. I've put my set to good use on hard and soft punky woods, dry and wet, and have no complaints. Steel seems to be high quality and holds an edge as well as the Sorbey's I've used. Gouge is well designed with a short flute for stability. It's not every chisel you'll ever want and you may not even use a couple of them, but it should be enough for most beginner and intermediate turners to get things done. - FishNFries on Twitch
