La Vaca Que Decia Oink

La vaca que decía OINK is a book originally written in English by Bernard Most, but this translation continues to represent the whimsical humor and spirit of his work. I use this book as a read aloud to my students who are preparing to be elementary teachers. Most of my students are monolingual English speakers and they are a bit unsettled when I start reading this book in Spanish them! But, what is revealed is that the vivid pictures and his targeted speech bubbles help students understand that language can be understood through inflection, visuals and connection to the originally intended humor of Bernard Most.My students and I have rich discussions about how we made meaning out of the book even when we do not know the language in which it is written. This read aloud becomes an anchor lesson. Whenever we talk about how students understand readings, we come back to this experience of La vaca que decía OINK. A true winner!

Love this book!

This is really a wonderful story for bilingual kids because it shows the benefits of being bilingual! BOth the cow and the pig are like outsiders/foreigners who don't fit in and aren't accepted because they don't speak the right language, but once they have learned to speak both their and the other language they are clearly ahead of the other animals.
