He comes wit a rogues gallery of friends which include Alanen, the disgraced priest who owns the bookstore, the writer Luusalmi who's managed to scibble one successful book in his life, the ex-con Antidore, whose underworld connections come in handy, and pretty blonde cab driver/ exotic dancer Anna. His outward appearance alternates between scruffy - necessary to gain the trust of lowlifes he needs for information - to cleaned up - useful for gaining the attention of ladies he's got his eye on. Set in Turku on Finland's southwestern coast, the quirky Private Eye Vares features cases that run the gamut from intimate family score-setting to big-time Russian Mafia trouble.The second episode deals with a case that started ten years ago when three fun-loving female students vanished one after the other. Although no bodies were ever found, the entire nation was convinced that they had been killed. Journalist Ruuhio hires his friend Vares to pick up the investigation, but his timing couldn't be worse.I enjoy watching the Finnish addition to the Nordic crime series and I think that they do the hard-boiled detective well. There is good acting, some humour mixed with the brutal crimes and good casting for the characters. The lone wolf hard-boiled, hard-drinking, lady-loving character has been seen a million times before and it's not usually my kind of thing, but I rather enjoyed this series. 3.5 starsI think two different actors have played Vares; Antti Reini who is the lead in these films:1. TANGO OF DARKNESS (2012)And Juha Veijonen who is the lead in "Vares - Private Eye" (2004) and "V2 - Dead Angel"(2007).There are no extras on these DVDs. Each instalment is approx 90 minutes long and can be viewed on its own, but I would recommend starting from the beginning to get a better understanding of Vares and his motley crew.
