I've used one of these ice shavers before in Asia, but not seen them here in the UK. Despite the listing title, this is NOT an ice-crusher. Rather, it shaves the ice into a quite fine 'snow'. It's very simply designed and very effective. Basically, there is a small lidded bowl in which you freeze water (for straight ice) or any other liquid. Once frozen, the ice block is placed into the upper chamber of the shaver. The ice block is pushed down firmly onto the shaving blade by a sprung plate; and by turning the handle, the ice block is turned on the shaving blade and the shaved ice drops into the transparent plastic container below. The texture produced is finer than you can get by crushing ice in a blender - more like actual snow than ice.You can either shave ice and pour a flavoured syrup over it (the traditional snow-cone), or you can freeze flavoured liquids and shave those, producing something similar to Italian granitas. My personal favourite is to puree tinned mango in syrup, and freeze that: it produces a delicious and thirst-quenching ice; although a frozen Margarita would come a close second!This is a simple and effective gadget, and would be fun to use with children as well as for more sophisticated uses for deserts and cocktails. My only caution would be that it may be worth supplementing the feezing bowl with another similar container if you are catering to several people. Recommended!

I absolutely love this! I ordered to make snow cones etc for my son in summer as id just shave plain ice (and add syrup) or fruit juice to make desserts for him. However! I discovered this is excellent for margaritas! Fill the little liquid hopper with ice or margarita mix and freeze and then turn into shaved ice - incredible!I cannot wait for summer to make shaved ice margaritas and other shaved ice cocktails.Id love to be able to purchase more than one liquid holder thing so that i could have several liquids freezing away at the same time - That's my only negative about this as everything else is spot on.
