This glimpse of the inside of 27 year old Dostoevsky’s head is enough to celebrate
For sure there is a sense of distance - of time, of place, of culture - which made some aspects of the first story 'White Nights’ a little hard to digest. The narrator is unusual even for his own time and place - obsessive, lonely, highly emotional - but his desperate diatribes to the young woman he has fallen for, are melodramatic, somewhat repetitive and difficult to process. The second story ‘Bobok' - where we get to overhear the conversations of the recently dead in a cemetery, just blew me away. How many times - as a frequenter of graveyards - have I wondered what the dead would tell us, and and what would they say to their near neighbours, if they could talk?! And, of course, they are just as they were when they lived, bickering, egotistical, small-minded. I will never think of the dead in quite the same way again...

Very Good
"only I would love you, I would love you so, that even if you still loved him, even if you went on loving the man I don’t know, you would never feel that my love was a burden to you."

Cover was dirty
Unfortunately the cover was dirty with grey marks and it wasn't at all sealed

This was a different Dostoevsky story to any I've read. To think it was first published over 170 years ago, it's hard to know if the interactions between the two protagonists is based on any reality of the times. Taking place over four days, the young man and woman go through the gamut of emotions and the love expressed between them seems quite remarkable, especially as they are both so young and inexperienced in relationships. Didn't really work for me, but interesting nonetheless.

O simply have no words to say about this book, it’s so amazing and so well write! Dostoiévski it’s just a genius. This is the MOST romantic book I’ve ever read and I’ve devoured it so fast! I didn’t saw the time past, I was immerse at the sentiments of the main character that when I stop reading I’ve reached the end. Well, English is not my first language, so if I made some mistakes here I apologize. Just read! It will be probably one of you favorite books of the year.

One of the best books I ever read. Story is very good. The paper and print quality were amazing at this rate. Finest work from the author.

A beautifully written short story that captures loneliness, hope, and fleeting love in Dostoevsky’s poetic way. The clothbound edition is stunning — elegant cover, quality paper, and perfect for any classic literature collection. A little book that feels timeless.

Highly recommended classic as an easy intro to Russian literature.
