Don't expect the artwork they're advertising. You get generic case. No sleeve.

I know what the film is about as I've seen it before. What I am upset about is the fact I ordered this item with the limited edition artwork (the outer sleeve) which I didn't receive. This isn't the first time this has happened and it's REALLY annoying. If I wanted the generic case artwork I could have purchased this for cheaper elsewhere. Why is this such a problem? This also happens with some 4k UHD films I've purchased. It's not fair to the customer. Either sell the item as described or don't advertise it as such!

Can we fix it? Yes we can!

This ambitious, stylish and visually stunning SF fantasy family movie is marvellously entertaining with impressive CGI effects, refreshing optimistic energy and delightful humour with its Fringe-lite scenario. Despite its convoluted plot, uneven narrative and occasional preachy moments there is no doubting its charm whose cinematography at times has a feel of Terry Gilliam with its breath-taking Jetson-esque utopian future-retro cityscape complete with Art Deco skyscrapers, monorails and floating swimming pools. There are some tremendous set pieces in particularly the fight scene in the SF memorabilia shop Blast from the Past and the robotic siege of an inventor’s house (reminiscent of Zulu and Attack on Precinct 13). The three leads give good value - George Clooney as a disillusioned reclusive former boy-genius inventor, Britt Robertson as a feisty optimistic teenage scientist and a wonderful performance by Raffey Cassidy as Athena, a young girl from another dimension on a mission, while Hugh Laurie is suitably villainous as the head honcho of the elusive Tomorrowland. Flawed, granted, but a fabulous fun-filled film which I will be re-watching.

Doesn't have the courage of its convictions.

It's the last act that we remember a movie by, as Robert McKee (well, Brian Cox) tells Charlie Kaufman (well, Nic Cage) in Adaptation. Spoilers coming up now, because the first two acts of this movie are full of wit, charm and inventiveness. On the strength of just those 90 minutes I'd have given it 5 stars. Then we get to act three and we discover that the antagonist is not a Bond villain, but a genuinely disappointed idealist. He hasn't got an evil plan, he just has the wrong plan for trying to do good. Interesting so far. But then it's as if another writer took over, and it all gets lost in over-busy violence that feels like a lot of running around getting nowhere. And to round it off, the adversary character has to die because - well, because villains always have to die in movies nowadays, don't they? Hollywood would apply capital punishment just for not being very nice. The trouble is, since the whole point of the story is about the importance of having a hopeful & upbeat approach to the future, ending it with fights, explosions and gratuitous deaths is a cop-out. A less mean-spirited way to go about it would be to show the baddie how wrong he was - which could still be done dramatically, btw; I'm not proposing it should fizzle out into a lecture. But that would have taken a cleverer and braver approach to the writing. You can just see the studio execs dropping their cigars in dismay and saying, no, no, the Big Bad has to die, it's a rule, get another writer. But the end result is that it leaves the whole movie with a bad taste. It didn't have the courage of its convictions.
