Smells like…
The media could not be loaded. Whoever heard of powdered butter? Who would need powdered butter? Hey, I never thought I would need powdered butter until the Texas winter storm of 2021. Without Amazon, I wouldn’t have known that powdered butter existed. Here’s what you need to know:• This powder has a slight smell like ghee when the lid is opened. Internet search ghee for more information. Watch my video.• This powdered dried butter has more than one use. I used mine reconstituted with avocado oil in a hot pan to scramble a powdered egg. I also used it in my morning beverage. I’m still experimenting with it.• The directions said to reconstitute with water but I discovered that hot water worked best.If you want more information to make an informed decision, keep reading. The video shows what the powdered butter looks like - soft and smooth - not sandy crystals. I reconstituted it with avocado oil and cooked reconstituted power egg and it was okay - definitely not the same as fresh products. The video shows the texture of the product. If you break the seal, go on and use the product and buy an unopened product for long term storage. The photos show the nutritional content and the term “nonfat milk solids.” If you want to know more about those terms, keep reading.Does this dried butter have a smell? Yes - butter has a smell that changes with the origin of the food the cows eat, the type of cow, how the butter is made, and so on. Consumers have been trained to accept the smell and taste of margarine and low quality butter. Most adults don’t know what quality butter is supposed to taste like. Will this powdered butter replace the taste of high quality butter? Nope, not for my taste buds.I purchased this powdered butter to make buttered coffee. I also purchased dehydrated cream. My situation is that I’m trying to stay as close as possible to nature with my food while camping, traveling, and surviving disasters and supply chain disruptions. enjoying small pleasures with my morning hot beverage. Avoiding triggering metabolic disruptions or food sensitivities is the big picture. Your situation may be different, but I’m aiming for a low carb lifestyle no matter what supply chain disruptions are thrown at me.So far I’ve lost 10 pounds in 6 weeks by lowering known and hidden carbs and eliminating crystalized sugar in my morning hot beverage. It’s been a long struggle.I’m also removing foods that trigger tummy IBS problems. Sometimes only one part of a food triggers problems for my tummy. I must read labels carefully. I have included a photo of the nutritional content for you.I have three goals. One goal is to go camping without triggering IBS tummy problems. The other goal is disaster and grid failure preparedness. The last goal is to travel with foods that keep me healthy.During recent grid failures in Texas including summer power outages (had another one one yesterday), I realized the need a 14 day food supply to be prepared not only for locals supply chain disruptions, but disasters in other areas that affect my space on the world. Am I sounding too serious? That’s because I am. Fourteen days is the time I need to say healthy while the local stores rebuild their food supplies. I plan to cook with the food, keep up with blood labs, and monitor my health. I had lots of polished rice which is exactly what spikes my blood sugar levels. I can eat it but only in small amounts. My body reads white rice as sugar. I looked at my favorite creamer and was stunned to discover the ingredients that caused tummy bloating. You may not have my situation but I can say that this dried butter did not trigger tummy bloating. The supply chain disruptions happened during a hurricane 4 hours away some years ago, a 2021 winter storm when we had 4 days without electricity, and the early months of the pandemic too. How long will I keep telling this story - continually - because people have short memories. I never thought I would see 3rd world food and basic needs shortages in my part of the USA.Because senior officials abandoned the senior citizens including a nearby huge “luxury” apartment housing area for seniors, I saw my senior aged neighbors forced from their homes without heat, and FEMA never came to us, I decided that I would start building a 14 day supply of basic foods and equipment beyond basic camping supplies.Because of my recent experiences, I began a plan to slowly prepare for the unexpected. My knowledge of camping saved my life. We had food, but I took note of what was missing on grocery store shelves. There was no butter, eggs, milk and other foods. I had butter but there was no butter on the grocery store shelves. Amazon could not make deliveries to people shut in like me. I cannot be dependent on other people to take care of me in a disaster. I helped others but no one helped me. You may be here for a keto diet, but I am encouraging people to think beyond keto. This powdered butter can be a life saver as part of an overall disaster preparedness plan. Processed carbs keep people hungry. I can fast longer from solid food with this product in my morning beverage. Just saying to think beyond the marketing of this product. Think to the future. My camping knowledge helped us survived but truly - I almost went to Cancun too. Internet search Cancun, Texas, and winter storm and you’ll see my point. This dried butter reconstituted with avocado oil - not water. It tasted mildly like butter. Hot water will melt this dried butter.Cons: I wish there was more nutritional content on the label. I appreciate the calcium content listed but would like to have seen more. Some people may only care about the taste or using it in recipes, but I care about health. The review is to help you understand what you will receive if you purchase this product. You read this far so I’d like to give you added value for your time and patience. I cannot place a link outside of this website but — if you want to know what’s in a “nonfat milk solid” search for the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada food science milk-solids-not-fat and your will find an article that explains the science of an ingredient on the label. I’m surprised that the lactose did not trigger tummy issues because I’m sensitive to lactose.I’m also experimenting with powdered eggs purchased on Amazon. See my review on Augason Farms dried whole egg powder for how this product affected the scrambled powdered egg.If you like my style of writing, kindly consider following my reviews on Amazon. One of my sons will not read a long review. He says that “nobody” reads long reviews. I’ve learned that some people have a one and done mindset. Tell me you love a product and move on. The same people are furious when “love it” products are non returnable and non refundable. I don’t love inanimate objects. They are things and things serve a purpose.• Did using this product extend the satisfaction of my morning hot beverage - yes.• Can I scramble powdered eggs with this dried butter? Only if I add avocado oil and powdered butter together first in a hot pan then add the powdered egg. These longer reviews are written to help people who want to know why they should consider the product. I never by a product based on an “I love it” review if the reviewer does not explain why. I made that mistake early in my online shopping experiences. I read negative reviews too. When I began reading the “why” part of reviews, my online shopping experiences became successful. If I give you good content, you will buy what’s best for your situation. I believe that happy online buyers are informed buyers. As people begin to travel again, I believe a new market will open for people who would never have considered shelf stable products like powdered butter. I believe this product is versatile and can be included in other foods. I’ll certainly be experimenting with it. It is blendable in a hot liquid or heated with an oil.I write for people who want to know what to expect when the product is opened and used.Do you feel more knowledgeable and confident about purchasing this dried powdered butter?I hope I have delivered on that goal.Unless you, dear reader, click the “helpful” button, I won’t know if my goal was achieved in writing this review. I won’t know that I’ve helped people. If you follow me as a reviewer, you may not need the items I review, but may get a dose of laughter and help someone else. Who knew there was such a thing as dried powdered butter? I surely did not.Be well.

Strong enough to 'cover' canned tuna
EDIT AGAIN, this time 12/30/14: wow, this makes a great dip. I mixed maybe a tablespoon of it dry with probably 2 tablespoons of Hoosier Hill Kale Powder, and maybe four tablespoons of peanut powder aka flour (not the Hoosier Hill brand, but the other one sold here on Amazon). Added water to make a dip, and some Rajun Cajun. Let sit a few minutes for the mixture to bloom. If you taste-test it, you're liable to want to eat the whole thing, company be damned, lol. That's what I'm doing now, as I type. ;)======EDIT: this also 'corrects' for the classical green bean casserole where you get too antsy and eat 1/3 of the condensed mushroom soup still in the can, while waiting for the powdered milk to liquify in the green-bean juice. :) Specifically, I decided not to use real milk per the recipe, but powdered milk instead (1/2 cup dry) on the green bean cans' liquid (only two not the normal 3). I thus added 2 tbsp of real butter and a heaping soup spoon of this powder, to make up for the 'missing' mushroom soup. The bleu cheese didn't overpower in smell or taste. And now that 'casserole' is happily cooking on my stove (faster than in the oven). If it matters, I also substituted potato sticks for some of the French's Onions. Very rich, oooh la la. Cooking in a caldera, can always finish the last five minutes by putting it in the oven (which would matter, were you also trying to cook a turkey). Oh: and the canned french cut green beans have more green-bean taste than normal (vertical) cut beans. (If you'd rather use fresh green beans, you'll need to cook them first, separately, and reserve the liquid.)Original review, follows below.==================If you were to just stick a spoon in the jar and then taste the powder, you'd swear you were eating real bleu cheese. Because, you are. I'm really surprised how good this is. It, along with the white cheddar also sold by Hoosier Hill, are top notch. You don't need much to flavor, and obviously you could just take pinches of this very flour-like powder and sprinkle it on your salad prior to serving -- or, I suppose you could mix it with oil or water and then make it into a dressing. In my case, I wanted to see if it could correct or smother canned tuna, the smell of which I can't stand (don't know why). It did cover both smell and taste, along with the Kale powder made also by Hoosier Hill. EITHER of them do that job well. Thus you have an idea how powerful it can be, and how you should use it sparingly.Best of all, the nutrition info: three teaspoons are only 91 calories, have 20% calcium, 5 grams protein. Yay.This will become a staple, pour moi. Far easier and more economical, nutritious, than 'fresh' bleu cheese. And tastier, imo.

tasty, tangy, convenient
This is a great way to add some savory flavor without having to keep a more perishable source on hand; the flavor is mild in comparison to actual blue cheese, and the calorie count is relatively high, but it also has a pretty decent amount of protein. It is tasty and I liked adding it to regular boxed mac n cheese or other pasta dish, or sprinkling over a salad rather than using dressing. I am glad I bought it to try.
