Review: Practical metal feeder for an outside run, works well for my flock of 12 hens - I have 12 hens and needed a feeder that would keep them supplied when I can’t get to them every day. This is set up in an outside run under cover, raised on a couple of breezeblocks to bring it up to a better height. It’s a straightforward gravity feeder and the birds took to it immediately. I previously tried a treadle feeder to no avail. With this one there was no training needed and they seem to prefer it. I still keep their old feeders around, but most of them head to this one first. The metal isn’t especially thick, but it feels sturdy enough in use and there’s been no rust so far. The lid fits properly. I’ve added a bit of weight on top as a precaution, as I wasn’t sure whether a determined chicken or rodent might shift it otherwise. I would worry about water getting in if it wasn't undercover. It’s advertised as a 25kg feeder but it doesn’t quite take a full 20kg sack of layers pellets in one go. That may be down to the bulk of pellets compared to whatever feed the capacity figure is based on, but it’s worth being aware of. Refilling is easy, it has stayed dry under cover, and I haven’t had any clogging issues. There’s no noticeable feed scattered around it, which suggests it’s limiting waste. The only real downside is that once it’s full it’s awkward to move. The edges you can grip are fairly thin, and lifting it when loaded isn’t comfortable. In reality that just means you fill it where you intend to leave it.
