The flap does not magically swing open on its own. It works like this: 1) Your pet puts their head into the tunnel. 2) The sensor reads the pet's microchip. 3) The *locks* on the flap will unlock. This will make an audible clicking sound. 4) The pet pushes the flap open and enters. The clicking sound might initially startle some pets, but I have found that they easily get used to it. **Q: Does the door allows the entry of illumination? I'd like to install on my bedroom door!** A: The door is clear so, if it is light outside, it will shine through. Also, I would ask them to ship you a door with the modified sensor. The microchip sensor is straight down and would not detect my dog because of her long snout. After I called them they sent me a modified door and I returned the original. Great customer service! Also, please know that the sensor only picks up entry, not exit. So my cat, who is not programmed, could potentially exit and be stuck outside. So far that has not happened, I spray her with water to deter her from getting too interested in going through. Other than these items the door is great. My dog learned very quickly. I love it. **Q: Does an animals microchip work when installed in an exterior metal door?** A: I'm not sure if it's the metal door causing issues, but it doesn't work for 2 of my 4 cats. All have new microchips. I finally had to turn off the locking feature so they could all use the door. It may also be an issue that they have to stick their head a couple of inches into the tunnel and wait for a couple of seconds to see if the door unlocks? It usually works if I jam them in the door and hold them them there (Yes...they hate this as much as you think!). I like the door, I just wish it was a little more sensitive to the chip RFID... **Q: How does the flap shut? As our cat has broken out of three different cat flaps so far** A: If the door is actually locked based on the timer they won't be able to get out. After a day, cats figured out how to use. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Could definitely be better for the money *by P***R on February 21, 2026* IMPORTANT: If you want to keep some pets in while allowing others to come and go, then you will have to install this thing backwards. This is because the door only has one set of sensors and it is primarily designed and meant to keep unwanted animals out. Installing it backwards means the electronic components will be exposed to the weather which is a downer, and may make connecting the door to the Internet hub more difficult. Also installing it this way will allow any animal that can fit to enter your home, which is a downer too but also useful if an indoor only pet some how makes an escape and then wants back in. Bottom line: I took off a star because of this awkwardness and the fact that it needs a sold separately hub to connect to the Internet as opposed to just having that hardware built into the door. For as much as everything costs it should be more versatile with two sets of sensors for coming AND going, as well as connecting to my wireless router wirelessly without the wired hub (again sold separately). Also I would prefer a version that plugs into a wall outlet instead of using batteries that will eventually and unpredictabily die. Some times using a wire is just better, especially if not using one for power on the door means needing two wires elsewhere for a sold separately Internet hub (one for power and an Ethernet cord to my wireless router). I would be willing to pay more for these better functionalities.
