Asteroid City (2023), v1.05
This was my first rental on Amazon Prime and I found that I could watch it more than once, it is available during the 48 hour rental period.Part behind scenes activities in a television theater play. Black and white.Part the story that the theater is working to perform. Pastel coloured, set as in film theater view.I like the IMDb review that describes this as a story within a story within a story.Wes Craven tried a very different variation of this in New Nightmare (1994).I find this better than many films that I have seen recently. Better being that for me it is easier to watch. I note that many rate this low, could be that meant that it is way more affordable than the headliners just now. That did allow me to to try this out.The word ‘surreal’ springs to mind, but that is not the best word for this film.Several 1950’s themes, McCarthy as rather dominant, it feels like a modern story. As if 1955 has a lot of modern components.Reading the user reviews made me look to books related to the film and the blurb on those told me that the 1950's were considered in depth. This story didn't just happen.I don’t know Wes Anderson’s work. This tells me I should not avoid it. Do I have to admit that I only saw this because I got him confused with Kevin Williamson of Scream?

Nice version of a less than perfect Wes Anderson film.
I enjoyed this movie, mainly for it's asthetics. The story is fine, but Anderson's penchant for cramming too many actors into his movies is becoming tiresom. Perhaps he should (and I mean this with genuine enthusiasm) endeavour to construct a multifaceted mini series. I would like to see a 4K release of this at some point, but in the meantime this is a stunning transfer to blu ray, and when viewed upscaled on an 4K OLED screen, it really is a sight to behold. The packaging here on the Junior Stargazer's Edition is superb. A thick card rigid slipcase with removable J card and peel of ratings labels means the end product looks fantastic. The matt finish with spot glossing on the title looks fantastic. The enclosed eco slim case amaray makes room for the thick card stock postcards and dual sided gloss film stills. If you're a Wes fan, then this version is currently the one to get.

Avoid
A self indulgent mess of confusion.A story about what goes on when making an uninteresting B movie about how diverse odd balls all go to the same artificial village dressed up in the usual Wes Anderson style of symmetry and colour. Actors and producers behaving like 12 year olds with a home movie homework project. I almost, with great patience of which I normally have a lot, made it to the end. Avoid and save your time for something more serious eg the A-bomb Carry On in Nagashima movie.

It's very Wes Anderson, isn't it? But not his best
I really wanted to love this film, but sometimes the Wes Andersonisms got in the way. If you like the Wes Anderson style - and the stellar cast - then you'll probably like this film. But honestly I was hoping for something as good as Grand Budapest or French Dispatch, and it just didn't reach that level for me.

The soundtrack to this motion picture contains NO Gas Music from Jupiter.
All film reviews are undeniably subjective so naturally this one is no exception. I've given this Wes Anderson 5 stars but I doubt few people would measure it by the same yardstick that I employed. You see, I've been waiting almost 50 years for a Firesign Theatre movie and at last it has arrived! This cinematic depiction of a theatrical production set in an American desert town is the perfect companion piece to the vinyl long-player production of "Everything You Know Is Wrong", performed, written and produced by The Firesign Theatre and recorded in Hellmouth, California in 1974. Both works allude to U.S. military encounters with extra-terrestrial consciousness. 'Nuff Said.In fairness to the 98% of readers of this review who (understandably) have no idea who or what I am talking about I will just add the comment that Wes Anderson films are decidedly idiosyncratic. You simply have to view them for yourself.

Different, with a capital.... HUH?
I had to watch it twice to even begin to understand it. Visually good to look at with its 50's sunbaked and pastel shades. Quite cleverly done the way the whole thing is put together, but would I recommend it to friends?...I love offbeat films and anything to do with the 50's sci-fi themes has me hooked, but not sure that I would still be classed among those trusted people to say, Hey,..here's a good film to look at!...It is perhaps too offbeat for some. I did enjoy it, yes, but I doubt now if i will ever watch it again like some other films I revisit sometimes like ANY of the old b/w 50's offerings. Sorry, this is one of those make your own minds up reviews.
